Hey Celtic Wench, got an update on that dress? I've been dying to see it. The dress was.....crap. Part of the problem was the fabric I chose (so I can't blame the seamstress for that), but she also stuck to the pattern -- which created a lovely costume. With no support, completely lacking the correct "period" fit. Plus, she used eyelets for the lacings instead of grommets, and the first time I tried it on I promptly broke 2 of them. Ugh. I was soooooo disappointed! Thankfully I had a few other things to wear to the wedding - there are pics in my MySpace (oook_thelibrarian, I'll have to add you as a friend if you want to see them), and I'll try to get them uploaded to a photo site soon.

Hey guys. I know it's a bit late for this season, but other faires are happening, so I though I would offer my assistance to anyone needing help with garb. I can do anything regardless of size, fabric and whether or not you can find the "right pattern" (I really don't like patterns. Too limiting) But fair warning to all. I am a little anal about accuracy and fabric. I also have a ton of unused garb laying around my house. I either made it for me and didn't wear it or it was something I got into my head to make and just made it with no use for it. I tend to do stuff like that. I also make many different kinds of faeire wings if anyone needs them. Jsut thought I would throw it out there. I'm here if anyone needs help.

Does anyone know where to get good fabric dye? I'm trying to find a *deep* crimson red, blood red or something like, and *none* of the red's I've found are deep enough. I wanna dye the dress I wore to the party, and while I know how to sew...no freaking clue about where to get dye.

The dress you want to dye is it white? If not what color is it? I have tried to dye a per of gray jeans black after splashing bleach on them. The jeans did not pick up any of the color. You will have better luck dying if the fabric is not previously dyed. This is just what I can remember. You can try going to www.renaissancefestival.com/community/discussion/ and go to the sewing circle and ask the same question. There are a lot of people on that site that may be able to help you.

wanderingwench, CelticWench and Rourke....I saw you all at GLMF this season and you looked wonderful! wanderingwench, you turned into a very saucy looking Piratess and I'm sure Vinnie was right proud of you! CelticWench, you silly girl...I'm sorry your dress for the wedding didn't turn out right, but you were still cute in what you wore. I'm so glad I met you this year and hope to work with you in the future! Rourke, you make a FABO Pirate! I like your style! I know David is proud of his 1st Mate! *smile* As for putting Garb together...You can save a LOT of money by going to Thrift Stores and Good Will. I actually found a Black Watch Kilt from Edinburgh, Scotland for a whole $2.99...and another kilt from Scotland, a Campbell Tartan, also for $2.99! I seriously wept, then skipped out with my Booty and a smile on my face! I also bought several other skirts to add to my wardrobe for $2 or $3 per! I got my boots from Payless for $30, and they work well for me. I wear Bloomers, so the ruffle helps to create the illusion of the bucket cuff. I hate wearing the same thing all the time, so I change it up with different colors of skirts, bodices and bloomers! And, accessorize! Knives, pouches, oh, and I finally acquired a fine Bluderbust! It's awesome! I've been wearing scarves, and now have decided to get a bit more flamboyant with a nice hat and feathers. Anyway, I suggest adding to your garb, piece by piece. It's fun and a less expensive way to go. You all look so awesome!!!

PROBABLY----- EVERYONE KNOWS THIS...but maybe not:
My son & I make most of our costumes. We hand-sew them, on our laps, all Winter...
As To Where To Get The "things" to make them :
---I hunt the Thrift Shops & Goodwill. (Some times, I do well there. Sometimes, ---not. )
We all know that velvet and satin, brocades, and other fancy fabrics are expensive, but you just might find a lovely vintage gown, or prom dress with enough fabric in it to cut up for making your creation. (You can make a really beautiful drawstring bag or purse from vintage fabrics !!! Sew on LOTS of pearls !!!) I have discovered "vintage velvet" at thrift Shops ( And, ----YES, it is EXQUISITE, quite unlike modern velvet.)
Also, look for old doillies and tableclothes as a source of hand-made lace to trim cuffs.
Many vintage boots (even motorcycle ones ) can be cut down," trimmed-out", ( ---and covered where you cut them with matching color strips of leather and super glue) add vintage buckles (look for old rhinestone ones...). Super-glue on them, to create those (if you buy them) "expensive" Lords & Ladies high-heeled shoes.
For very "special fabrics' you can even create your own designs by painting them with "fabric paint".
For a chemise to wear under your gown, you might find a large white or cream-colored nightgown. Remove the collar and sew on some old lace (old lace can be dyed in a strong tea) . Do the same for a man's Medievel shirt. You can "run" lace down the front of a big man's shirt or add lace to the cuffs of a tux shirt (some of them come with lace fronts, anyway...).
Hunt for vintage jewelry that you can touch up (with gold or silver paint, and a fine brush or q-tip). Look at Flea markets & garage sales.
---Just a few thoughts on Medievel Clothing...

SHHH- your giving away the secrets! But seriously, we have an impressive costume jewelry collection all from thrift stores. You can find very useful belts. I even turned a ladies leather belt into a sword frog. And fabric! While we can't always find what we are looking for, we sure have scored some beautiful fabrics for near to nothing. Did I mention fur? I've gotten furs and fur collars. These can be put on cloaks, worn by themselves or made into wraps, sporrans etc. We have pruchased pewter mugs for 60 cents! If they are engraved with someones initials, just brush them off with a dremel or fine grit sand paper. I've even glued a beautiful pewter crest pin over engraving which I also got at the thrift store for $2 . The trick is to look at an item with some imagination. Have fun!

for those that dont know what a saracen is its medieval slang for "Arab" back during the crusades.

Obert, I think thats going to be a tough one. It all depends on how much detail you want in the outfit. I've been getting my mid 14th century knight garb together for over 2 years now. It is still a work in progress until the level of detail and period accuracy is to my liking. I will keep my eyes open as I'm always surfin for pics and descriptions of warriors through the ages. I'll post any links that might help you.
