I am REALLY not a fan of that pattern in general, let's us start off by saying. Guys, Simplicity makes a lot of money basically generating the same pattern with different pictures on the envelope. It's all in the FABRIC you choose, the trim you add, and the attitude you carry it off with.
In my own opinion, you'd be better using a Revolutionary War pattern for the coat, breeches, and vest. Then watch the movie again taking careful notes about which ever character you are trying to produce. Is his left outside pocket torn? Does he have gold trim or yellow trim? Is the collar angular or rounded? Then select the appropriate gear at the check out line, and get to it.
Invest in a seam ripper, and patiently work your way through. Being sure to let us all know how it goes.

i agree with dame goode completely. I don't like the pattern either. It's fine for someone who just want's a costume that will suffice, but for one who wants it to look accurate and well-made (as I'm assuming you do), you need the Revolutionary War patterns, she's very right. Simplicity is very, very good at making patterns similar to (enough so to invoke memories of) movie costumes, but not at all accurate to them (and depending on the movie, the time period). I think though, that the shirt and the pants from your other garb pattern (you've got a post up for it) will do just fine. we'll all be here for advice, should you need it. Dame Goode seems to know a good deal more about that time era than I though, so you'll probably be better off with her. (actually, all the major pattern companies are good at inaccurate but similar movie costume reproductions. i think of all of simplicity's (i favor them, in general. it's my own preference, not necessarily because they're better than the others.) movie costume patterns, the phantom of the opera pattern was closest, and then only the female version, and really it wasn't that close.)
yeah, her half cape is my favorite piece as well. Its actually corduroy (if i remember correctly) or cotton twill...or something like that. She'd be able to tell you better, she told me once, and the fabric's not something I work with that often, so I don't remember. But i do love that red-its lovely. The green undergown is cotton, I believe, so it does breathe well. The gold overgown is something synthetic, probably nylon or some such thing, but it's so light that it flows out behind her when she walks and actually is a bit more like air conditioning than anything else. I wish I could get a decent shot of the detail on that overgown though: the fabrics got this lovely delicate flower embroidery on it, with one side having sparkles. (she decided to use it wrong side out to not see the sparkles, as she's not overfond of extravagance. I thought she should keep it sparkle-side-out, but I love anything shiny, so there you go.)

thanks for all the compliments on my costume. the cape fabric is corduroy, the underdress is a cotton (linen look solid for joann people) and I don't know what the overdress is(can't remember. I basically found the color and pattern lovely and the type of fabric just worked because it was more fancy then the underdress). I had some pictures of me where my face wasn't so weird. Rachel just chose those ones. also i was trying to make it more serene buy not smiling but not frowning either. I am going to have a ribbon in my hair too. I ordered some of those plastic headbands to cover and I have some trim that matches the trim on the undercoat sleeves that i am going to cover it with. the entire costume it very light and cool (except for the cape, but that is supposed to be warm and heavy for when i am freezing my tush off)
thanks again for the compliments, I am glad everyone likes it.

Oh, sorry! My message was so long to begin with...I didn't want it longer! Lol! I am more interested in the lower class definitely. As I will be working with Porter and Stout....perhaps piratey as well? I've never had a dress (one piece) so I usually go with a skirt and bodice combo. I like to wear something a little different each time and the two piece outfits make for easy mixing and matching. I definitely like the tight fit (tighter the better) hence my love for corsetry. Unfortunately I haven't the revenue to afford the 200 dollar and up versions that are considered "true" corsets. So I make do with what I can. The good thing about dressing as a lower class peasant is the ability to kind of throw a bunch of things together and make it look good! Wandering Wench - I too wear a FOH corset under my garb. The custom corsets are out of my price range. For garb, I buy a majority of my stuff on EBAY, and have had great luck doing so. I've purchased ensembles anywhere from 50.00 to 100.00. For some renny bling, (jewelry, belts) I have had luck at Target and Kohl's clearance racks. I even bought boots at Target last season for under $30 that look great with my pirate garb, IMHO. If you do anything with your hair, try a scarf or a headband for an inexpensive finishing touch. Good luck to you!

I should have the first half of my garb this weekend thanks to a wonderful older lady who doing my pants, jacket, and shirt for $25! =) Then when I go pick it up hopefully she'll start on my pirate coat. I still hold out hope I can make my cloak myself even though I won't really need it until OHRF unless a freakish cold snap happens at our faire.(You never know with NE Ohio weather. )

it's usually cold and rainy followed by a freak 95 degree day where all the newbies pass out from heat exhaustion

Keep in mind that Roxanne's idea of cold, usually doesn't match everyone elses. It can be sunny and 80 some degrees and she will still be chilly

I like the moat monsters!
They's cute.
And I hope hope hope we don't have any newbies passing out. That always worries me, even though I don't know half of them.
