I just got a newsletter from the Tortuga Twins informing me, among other things, they will no longer be performing at GLMF! They said it was due to circumstances "beyond their control". What's up with that? The optimism I had about this season just went down several notches, and fear of a Disney-fied faire skyrocketed.
Anybody know anything about this?

I heard that they were told to "tone down" their show and make it more "kid friendly" (all of the performers were told this) and the Tortuga Twins refused. So they were told to not come back. Just what I heard through the grapevine.

Personally I could care less. I caught all of the Tortuga's different shows. And while ok to check out once, I didn't really care to watch them again.
As to why they weren't asked back. No idea. Maybe they have someone else already lined up for that stage.

After looking around online a little I have found that the newsletter basically said it is because GLMF has downsized their budget

I guess that would explain it.

Yeah, considering the lack of attendance last season. And what the Tortugas charge.

Trevor, I must agree with you about the Tortugas, seen one show, seen em all! Just one giant infomercial for "buy our tee shirts, buy our DVD's" Maybe they will get someone on that stage who actually does a show!
If GLMF has downsized their budget ya gotta wonder what other things are they cutting back on? And will it lead to a downward sprial of attendance when people find out that the acts they liked are no longer there? Should be an interesting year. HANK.

We will have to wait and see. While cutting the budget sounds bad. Who knows. We might end up with some surprises. Remember Maidens IV last season? No one had heard of them. And I am sure they didn't cost a whole lot. But they sure created a buzz. I have faith in John to pull of some good moves.
It's not like the Tortuga's were a long time fixture at GLMF. They didn't start performing there until 2003. What if with the money that would have been spent on the Twins, the faire can bring in 2 good solid acts? I don't know what the Twins ask for contract-wise, but I know they are not cheap.
What will be interesting is Johnny Phoenix. He has been a long time staple. If he is there this season, then I doubt he will be next season. The reason I say that? Not anything to do with the faire. I know from talking to him that he is seriously considering retiring, or at least psudo retiring. I am sure John is aware of this as well. They are long time friends. And I am sure John has contingencies for this. That is one of the reasons I am not too worried. John isn't just thinking about this season, but into next season. How this years moves will affect the long term plans he has. We have someone in charge who not only has a plan, but the contacts and the knowledge to pull it off. Even if he is handcuffed by money constraints. I have no doubt he will pull a few surprises out of his hat.

Honestly? I don't know how much I'll miss the Tortugas. Their shows are ok, but like Hank said, there is definitely a "seen-one-seen-em-all" feeling to them....and the extensive product-hawking they do is tiresome. Also, in my experience they aren't the most approachable performers when they are off-stage. I mean, I get that performers need down time and all....but if you are wandering around the site in your costume, you have to expect that people are going to recognize you and possibly approach you. It seems like every year my hubby ends up with a pic of Scaramouche stomping around the grounds scowling. Hey maybe we can get Bardic Wind/Barely Balanced back? ! ? ! (just wishing out loud, certainly not making any demands or predictions!)

Hey maybe we can get Bardic Wind/Barely Balanced back? ! ? ! (just wishing out loud, certainly not making any demands or predictions!) Doubtful. They weren't back last year because they wanted too much money. Last I heard they wanted almost as much as what the fiare pays the jousters. (which is usually the most expensive act a faire hires)

Yeah, I saw Barely Balanced at the PA Ren. Festival and they said they weren't going to do the GLMF again purely for money reasons. Too bad, they're great! Some new acts would be nice. I agree with everyone else, the Tortuga Twins were getting boring.

Well, I just checked their site, and they are booked for Bristol during that time anyway. Also, for those who don't know Brandon K has also left the group now. The only one left that we know from GLMF is Cameron.

FYI speaking of other solid acts, Madiens IV are booked for the full run, except I think one Saturday. They have their dates on their website.

If the Tortugas were so damned "boring", why was there always a crowd at their stage during their shows? As for them not being a fixture, four years is a pretty good run for an entertainment act at this faire. They were certainly a fixture for me. Excuse me if I sound cranky, but I, and the rest of their fans in Ohio, will miss them.
