Ok. Time for my review.
Was really cool being in the shire at night. (yeah, I've been there at night before, but it's differnt when it's at the end of a long faire day, and you are already tired, worn out, and there aren't any lights) The weather was nice, especially for this late in October. Had fun walking around and checing things out. Didn't make it into the maze. Just not a maze kind of guy. (been to too many of them in past years at haunted houses) Also didn't make it into the haunted house. Thought about it several time, but each time there was always a line waiting to get in. Had a huge blast on the hay ride though. First it helped that I had some fun people around me. I was in the next to the last row on the wagon, behind me were some couples that were very jumpy. And in front of me were some teenage girls that kept screaming and jumping from one side of the wagon to the other. So it was quite entertaining. I loved all the bits that were set up, and the other people haunting the woods. Not sure what I thought about Tip driving like a madman half the time. In some ways it really added to the adventure. But it would have also been nice to go a little slower between places to let tension mount a little. The reaction when the vampires pulled someone off the wagon and bit them was awesome. The gasps, and looks of shock and disbelief were priceless. I think the only better reaction was later when the twins jumped on the back. Man, people about flipped!
Was nice to see a lot of familiar faces. Surprised at the lack of crowds though. Not sure if Larry didn't get the word out enough, or if the pricing kept people away. To be honest. Compaired to other haunts in the area, HK was probably one of the most expensive that I saw. Even the one at Blossom with 3 haunted houses had a lower ticket price. Now, to be fare though, I think the price would have been well worth it, if there would have been just a little bit more to hold people's attention. Probably was a little better before Piper's pulled out. But if you didn't know someone to stop and visit with, there wasn't much to do after the 3 main attractions. There was a nice selection of food though. Nice to see the brownies, but would have loved to have seen the cinnamin rolls there.
And before anyone takes exception to my opinions. Let me say. I realise this was done on short notice. And things probably weren't as well planned out as management would have liked. They did a great job with what they had. But I think if they do it again next season, (an I really hope they do) a few more things might help. A few more vendors. I know, this isn't really under their control. But if they know they are going to do it, they might be able to recruit a few more that are more appropriate. Like maybe someone selling pumpkins and such out front. Or with some of the talented locat artisans the faire has access to, maybe they could find someone to do shrunken head apple sculptures. Something like that would probably sell a little better at an attraction like this. Or how about a storyteller telling scary stories in the town square, or at the excalibur stage?
I also would like to point out, what a great way to advertise the faire. On the hayride, I heard a lot of people commenting about how big the faire was, and how cool it looked. And how they wanted to come back next summer to see what it was like. You pulled in a much different crownd with this event, and I think it will pay off at faire next season.

Just to clarify, I tend to type short comments for time and to keep thoughts coherent, lest I ramble. If I ever think something involving the cast or faire is a problem and needs changed and feel the need to insult it, you all will have no doubt about the intent.
Everything else is me just cutting to the chase to suggest improvements.
For the next time:
The staff MUST make better efforts to trim small branches out of the path of the trailers. I know it seems cool to have the occasional branch brush someone on the cheek but with the drivers behaving the way they prefer to, it's just asking for a lawsuit when someone catches one in the eye. This is not a request, this is me flat telling those in charge, this change needs to be made.
Advertising, this falls into that you need to spend a little to make a little. It's a tough call but when I need to call regulars to tell them this event is taking place, you have missed your target audience. It needs to start in the last 3 weeks of faire to grab our main audience base and spread in september. I'm gonna suggest a spot nobody probably thought about advertising in... High school football programs.
Pricing: your audience needs to know before they leave for the event what it's going to cost them (roughly) to play. (How many of you knew about the discount if you presented your 2009 GLMF pass?) They also need to know it's FREE to walk around. If we get them here, we can talk them into taking the rides. But we have to get them here with cash in pocket to pay for those.
Theme: There was nothing wrong with what we had this year. you all did great with the spots in the hayride. But just consider this as a "How cool could it be?" suggestion. I would love to see this as a Medieval themed haunted hayride. it would not take much to create some alternate scenes for the various stops on the route that would be entirely middle ages in scope. Nobody does a middle ages haunted house and that makes us a special stop on the haunted house circuit. (and we have the costuming) There are a good number of ghost stories from that era to be mined for use. The Vampires would need nothing more than a costume change, the witches are good to go, the pirates are fine, even our vivisection doctor would only need costuming alterations and the witch burning switches from little girls to the inquisition (don't get me wrong, I love the girls)
It's just something to consider.
