Okay... I really SHOULD hold my tongue, and I'm probably going to regret saying this later, but I can't keep silent any longer.
I've been watching the boards this whole year and resisting the urge to say anything because I don't think my view will be exactly popular, and I haven't wanted to add to any sort of drama, but...
Seriously, people... John was NOT some sort of messiah or great hero. There are several sides to every story, remember. John did some great things for the faire, and I was impressed with his skill in the management end of things, but he was most certainly not flawless and there were a lot of problems and some serious interpersonal issues as well.
I and a few other people will probably be coming back to cast now that there's another director change. I wasn't planning to before, because I had a number of major issues and misgivings with John and his directing style when it came to cast. And not every single cast member was thrilled with this past season, either (or performers, for that matter); but the ones I heard from, quietly and privately, did not say anything very loudly so as to minimize drama (among other reasons), so most of what you all have heard has been accolades and happiness, because anyone with misgivings and issues has kept fairly quiet.
So many of you keep painting John with this spotless golden glow, and I don't think it's deserved. He and his work has its merits and its faults, just like anyone else's.
*end alternate view*

I hate the politics of anything such as Faire, but they do exist, unfortunately. However, so does a certain "Magic", which, so far, I've found ONLY at GLMF!
My hope is that no matter the problems imbedded within Great Lakes, the magic will still be there to make it the wonderful place it has always been for me and many others. I've not found the same feeling at any of the other Faires I've worked, and when I speak to patrons and vendors about the people at GLMF and the great fun and comraderie we share, they often ask, "Why don't we have that here at this faire, then?" Well, the obvious answer is that it's YOU, the GLMF people; patrons, staff, entertainers, cast and vendors. There's an energy and a love that flows freely and consumes many around us! I watched this past year as NEW people were swept up into our revelrie, and were easily "adopted" as a part of our family! It was AWESOME to see this. My wish is that the spirit and magic of the folk from GLMF would ripple out into other faires. When you all made the invasion to ORF, I "FELT" you all there! Pub Sing was amazing, for once, and I smiled just knowing that you special people were there, sharing your magic and your spirit! I had hoped it would catch like a wildfire and the people there would pick it up and run with it...but, alas and alac, they remained stagnant and uninterested. It was sad and disheartening. When YOU left, the energy left, as well.
So, no matter who becomes ED, and no matter what politics are being played at GLMF, remember that it is YOU, each and every one of YOU, who make GLMF what it is, or what it will become! And, I, for one, am proud to be a part of YOU and GLMF! As long as you keep coming and supporting GLMF, it will always be wonderful and magical!
P.S. I did notice that since Larry invested in more advertising, there were more patrons! It will take the combined efforts of the owner and all of us who love GLMF to make it fun and keep them wanting to return!

I agree that there is magic in the shire. And in large part it is due to the people (be they patron, playtrn, worker, cast, performer, crafters, or boothies) And part of the magic is the setting. Being a smaller faire allows us more intimate contact, and more of a chance to influence the feel of the faire.
I will also agree that Larry does love the faire. If he didn't he wouldn't have stuck with it for so long with so many hurdles. But business decisions are made for business reasons. The same goes for any booth owner or hired performer. No matter how much they love the shire, they still have to make decisions based on what they believe will put more money in their pocket, and feed their families.

Just remember to hug. That will keep the magic alive. I'm serious. What happens to Faire in most other ways will be helped by this simple act.

I love hugs! And I love this faire and no matter what many of us say it is out of love and wanting only the best. This is my favorite place on earth and I will come back regardless of the politics being played.

I have been on the GLMF staff for almost 9 yrs. As with any job or boss- everyone has times when they don't agree or there is a misunderstanding. .. Larry has been a wonderful Boss and very very giving. He puts alot of trust into his staff . I wouldn't want to be in his shoes, its alot of hard work..I have always loved the faire even before I started working there, it was a wonderful escape from my own personal problems.I find all the people there very caring and always offering to help. I always liked John as well & I will miss him ,but I'm sure Scott the new Ed will do an awesome job..
