Add Disappointment.
As usual....TPTB disappoints alot of people, most likely for selfish reasons. Blah blah blah about the faire running on just the ED. The ED is 80% of the faire. Sure...the supporting staff works hard, but what are they without a ED? Especially one with the positive influence that John had.
GLMF needed John to get it back on track and was barely here long enough to keep it on track. Without John, we lose more than some of you want to believe.
As a result...GLMF will suffer yet again...

I agree with you Christy about all those jobs, but I have been around doing all those jobs also. Every job I have ever had didn't include just my job. It always meant helping everyone else out also. In normal jobs you don't do just what you are hired for you go above and beyond for your bosses and for you co-workers and help them out as well. You all work for the same goal. It is people like you who help make the faire successful because you help in all areas. The reason you do that is for the love of it.
The Ed is certainly not 80% of the faire. It is only another fraction of the faire itself. If anything the craters are a bigger asset to the faire than anyone. But we need everyone doing their job to make the faire run smoothly.
GLMF has only ever sufferd because of bad attitudes and negativity. We need to get rid of the negativity and bad attitudes because we all only want the same thing in the end. To be able to come to the faire and enjoy ourselves and our dear friends.

Let me preface this by saying I know only what I've read in this thread. I'm not a performer, nor am I a vendor (although I did end up working for a friend of mine for a good part of the summer!). John, your energy and enthusiasm was always evident whenever I saw you at faire, whether it was on stage as Hack & Slash, in the parade, or just "around." You will be missed. I also think it is very poor form for your peers to find out about this here, rather than from Larry (I'm referring to Panda's post). And I don't fault you, John, for posting it, rather it just seems like a lack of communication and respect on the part of...someone else. But again, I'm just a playtron. I hope things are discussed/resolved/whatever amongst those who are involved in all of this. As for the "who's more important, entertainers or vendors" thread that someone brought up....you can't have one without the other. Patrons pay to get in the gate, and expect to be entertained for the cost of that ticket. Having heard some good music, or watched a funny show, people are more willing to buy what is, for most of us, something totally frivolous. (Don't get me wrong, I love leather mugs, bubble wands, and Celtic jewelry as much as the next person, but I certainly don't NEED it!) If people feel they've paid to get in only to be surrounded by more people who want their money, they won't be nearly as happy. Everything - paid acts, parking attendants, volunteer cast, vendors, privy fairies, etc - works together to keep people coming back.... And yes, I'll be back. No matter what, as long as the gates are open and we're still living in the area.

The bottom line is this, there are over 100 employees that run this faire on the weekends not counting cast and vendors. When you add all of us up that's a heck of alot of people. If you break it down you've got Food, Entertainment, Crafts, Site. Entertainment is a major category and alot of hard work. I know I've been there and am still there. John did a ton of work in his short time here. Speaking for the entire staff of GLMF, we still have no idea why John choose to leave us as he hasn't talked to us about it. We know as much as all of you know. It is as big of a shock to us as it is to all of you. But, we will move on and continue making this a great show. People come and go. We plug on and keep going there is no job athat only one man can do. He might do some things better that others but with each individual you get a different vision of things. Not less or worse, maybe not better, just different. All we can do now is accept this situation for what it is and move on to make an amazing 2008 season.

This is the last "2 cents" I'm throwing into this thread. Hey, how about we have a systems analyst determine what percentage of the output belongs to each staff member, so we know more accurately who to blame?!
YES I'm being sarcastic!! I respect everyone's wish to be heard but I respectfully would like to see the angry comments and blame go elsewhere as being of little use. I agree with everyone who has said that GLMF as we know it will probably change. As I have said before, being one of the "old-timers" who's been there since nearly the beginning, I've seen a lot, and this was the best year ever. Thanks to John? You bet. Thanks to everyone else? You bet there too! If we continue to encourage everyone who partipates in the creation of Avaloch, and continue to offer our congratulations, support, well wishes, assistance, labor, prayers, or any other positive energy, who knows what could happen? Anger and recriminations only create more anger and recriminations, as we've seen too well on this board.
I love what John brought to Avaloch for two years. But since I'm not a seer and don't have a crystal ball, I can't say what next year will bring, but it's a looonnnnggg way off. If we offer positivity, then magical things can still happen there. Please don't seek to place blame. The ED is probably the most visible participant, but the 99 others count for just as much of the joy we experience every summer. Keep it up, gang!!

So I've kept my mouth shut for a good while on this thread and I'm not sure I can any longer.
There are several of you out there that this doesn't pertain to. However there are a few of you that have really upset me with your words.
Working as a cast member for almost 5 years, I feel I worked closely with John, and yes he will me missed both personally and professionally.
However, to discount all the hard work of everyone else involved is both disrespectful and hurtful.
Speaking for myself, I do this for you folks. To see you happy and smiling and having a good time. I shell out my time and money for the love of it, and a big part of the love is entertaining you all and every other patron that walks through those gates.
Frankly I take it as a personal insult to say that because the ED is gone, the faire could never possibly recover. That it will suffer.
That ignores everything the entertainment staff, cast, vendors, etc. have done and will continue doing for you. I really think you should look at the picture as a whole, and understand that the ED has changed over the years and will continue to change for many more to come.
I hope that this negative energy will die away before we get close to next season. Change is inevitable, and GLMF will never be the same, but that doesn't mean it will get worse. Change would happen even with John there. Its a fact of life.

I respect everyone's wish to be heard but I respectfully would like to see the angry comments and blame go elsewhere as being of little use. Actually, I tend to disagree with this comment. If people can't vent here, then where can they vent? Getting it out of their system is a way to deal with their feelings and move on. Now some of the comments are a little heavy handed and seem to be laying al the blame here on Larry. (and they are bordering on personal attacks wich will cause me to edit them if they get worse) While I can understand the knee-jerk reaction. But to be honest, we don't know the whole story here. So before people lay the blame on a particular person, lets wait and see what comes to light. I have said for years that the faire is a balancing act, and needs all areas going well to thrive. If one is suffering, it brings down the rest. The ED, much like the QB in football, is the most visible leader. So when things are going well, they tend to get the credit, and when things are going poorly, they tend to get the blame. It's not always fair, but that is the way things work.

Fanny Little stated, and I quote:Understand that the ED has changed over the years" Yeppers, sure has. Since I began going to GLMF in 1997 I have saved all of the programs as a souvenir, so I just drug 'em out and here are your ED's since 1997.
1997...Mark Sullivan. 1998...Mark Sullivan. 1999...Spencer Humm. Now, where do we know that name from? 2000...Spencer Humm. 2001...Spencer Humm. 2002...Brook Hall. 2003...Brook Hall. 2004...Brook Hall 2005...Brook Hall. 2006...John Davis. 2007...John Davis. 2008...?
So as you can see ED's come and go, but GLMF goes on. I myself really don't care. I thought John did a great job, but who is to say his successor won't do even better? Only time will tell. I really try not to get involved with the drama and politics of the place. To me, it is just some place to go for six weekends and have fun. The powers that be are going to run it as they see fit. Just like anyone who has their own business runs it their way. I know not what these "differences" they had were about. I just know from experience that there are THREE sides to every story: your side. My side. And somewhere in between lies the truth. HANK.

Remember the old saying "Change is good."
Yes, John will be missed. (I am pretty sure he knows this by now :-)) Yes, he did a wonderful job. Let him go in peace.
I, for one, am now starting to look forward to what changes will be made at Faire.

Sorry to be the wet blanket here, but somebody has to be. The faire obviously has problems that go beyond the ED. Until those problems are worked out, I will not be feeling all that positive about the future. I'm tired of people talking about the "negativity" like it's the root cause of the problems. It's a symptom, one that will disappear or at least be greatly reduced when the actual problems are solved.
Change is not good or bad, it just is.
