Just want to answer the 20% question. I was told that figure By Larry. I will not go into all of the issues, it really is nothing I would like to air. I will say that I am on to different projects and am happily moving forward. Thank you for your kind words.

No...the success of the Faire does not rest on one person...I hope Larry remembers that as well...

One thing constant... Larry...
One thing variable...entertainment directors...
The problem is obvious....way to go Larry....why don't you just sell the faire to someone who is content with hiring people who will do what they were hired to do, NOT what YOU want to do?

Well, this is certainly sad news. I understand your reasoning however. It was a real pleasure to work for you. Best of Luck to you!

Best of luck, John. It's been an adventure the last two years, and I'm glad to have had the experience to work with you as my ED.

Blacknight...World doesn't work that way my friend. Whose ever name appears in the lower right hand corner of your paycheck has the final say in the matter. I know not where you work, but you are simply there to carry out the wishes of your boss.
It boils down to whatever he says goes, or you go. and like it or not thats just the way it is for most of us. HANK.

Well said, He Who Lurks!!! Let's try to refrain from anger and instead put the energy into something constructive (not that I know yet what that could be!). Yes, I too am concerned about what could happen to our summer home, but we aren't there yet. Whoever steps into John's shoes (hard tho' they'll be to fill) let's show great support like we did for John, and help the gang keep going in great style.
What's the name of the cast performers' troupe? Bueller? Bueller? UP FROM THE ASHES! Got it?

The faire doesn't run on an entertainment director alone. The entertainment is only a part of what goes on at the faires. Don't forget all the wonderful crafters and friends that we all make every year. I personally don't come for the entertainment anyways. I come to see my friends and to eat the great food. Sometimes I think we all forget how much work goes into the faire. The volunteers can tell you what they alone do and that isn't counting what the site crew does, the office does etc., etc. The faire will go on and will be better than ever as long as we are always there to support it and help it grow. I for one will always be around. It is the best place on earth.
*In reference to this comment I would just like to say that most people don't know exactly how much the entertainment staff does do. I'm not saying that we do everything but Personally I have worked at the fair on the entertainment staff for the past three years. I have done everything from building stages, to costumes, to gardening to dance to almost falling off of food court buildings trying to paint them, to training volunteer cast, organizing schedules, booking independent acts, hanging signs and much much more. I have been up till 4am in the morning of opening day(along with John) finishing the touches on the faire, then gotten up at 7 am to get ready to perform. My first year I worked , no joke, atleast 10 hours a day 7 days a week for $150.00 a week. We do it for the love of the work, and to learn things from talented people like Sarah and John. We are fully aware of what all of the other people ,especially the wonderful volunteers, do for the place. I will also say that working with John Davis has been one of the highlights of my time at Great Lakes. He is an amazingly positive man who made more concessions proffessionally and personally to work for Great Lakes simply to see his commitment through than most people could know. I personally doubt that the faire will see as talented and empowering a enertainment director as John.HC

So I haven't been on the boards in a while and I find it very upsetting to come here to see how everyone is doing, and to find that our Entertainment director has quit. You'd think that maybe the staff, and more importantly Larry would be told before the rest of the world. I'm not going to say that I didn't see it coming. John if you are reading this, please call us so we can talk.

Agreed, this will not be the end of faire. But it is an end of an era. A short one, but a great one none-the-less. John had a plan, and he worked towards fullfilling that plan. Now we won't get to see what could have been.
But where one door closes, another one opens. And it will be interesting to see what (or more appropriatly, who) is behind that door. Will the new ED be like John? Probably not. Then again, I don't think I would like one that tries to copy his predecessor. We need someone with their own ideas and plans. With the resources to pull them off, and pull things together. But who also isn't afraid to use what worked for others before and incorporate it into their master plan.
But for now, most of us are still processing what is going on. Dealing with it the way that most people deal with change. With shock, anger, fear, denial and anxiety. Once people vent and work though their own natural progressions, then they will be able to turn towards the future and with luck regain some hope, and be able to find some of the magic that the shire has to offer.
