I did hear complaints that the royal court was unapproachable...which makes us angry. We're not getting a lot of street time, but we're trying. Next weekend should be better. I have a few thoughts on this. First, I think the biggest problem is that the nobles are kind of clumped together. Yes, I know this is actually pretty acurate for the period, but on an interactive level, it is intimidating. Most patrons are a bit intimidated when it comes to interacting anyway. So the thought of appraoching a group of cast is pretty much out of the question. And it is just plain harder to interact with a group than it is one-on-one. Second. The king is a rather intense individual. That intensity makes it seem like he is hard to approach. But I can attest hat once approached he is very amicable to speak with. Now, I don't really see this as a bad thing. I rather like the intense and rather regal persona he exudes. A king should be somewhat unapproachable. And there are ways to take that and still make it work with interaction with the public. Instead of waiting for people to approach, he can initiate the contact. Simple things like stopping patrons and asking if they have seen so-and-so, with maybe a little bit about how he needs to find him, keep track of him, watch out for him (depending on who it is, and the story behind why) With his voice, and the way he carries himself, a bit like that reaches a lot of people. Even if he isn't interacting directly with them, he is still making an impression and drawing people in. Especially if he is in a smaller group. Something like he and the queen. Or he and one of his knights, or with Merlin. But I do think the key is to split the royal court up into smaller groups, and varied clusters. The queen and the king The queen and Lancelot The queen and a LIW etc. I thnk that would make them all more appraochable, and also make it easier to stop and do bits. It is easier for 2 people to stop and do a small bit with a coujple, than it is for a large group to stop and interact with one person. Especially for smaller bits, like lessons on escorting your lady, lady on the right, palming, things like that. Small short bits that can draw people in.

Er...do you really think it's a good idea to have The Queen and Lancelot walking around together when Arthur isn't around? I mean...well...you know...*looks about*

unfortunately if the court was unapproachable, it cannot be attributed to clumping. rarely during the day was i with more than one other person. If said person must or would like to be somewhere else, i had to follow until a new escort could be found.

Now all I can picture is some Medieval Sports Caster announcing...
"The Queen and King are making a hard line down the center....the King fades back, back and to the left....Lancelot fakes a right and then hooks hard left then...right....the Queen is passed on and...and...and.... IT'S GOOD!
A great interception by Lancelot and the crowd goes wild!! The King is sent to the benches and a new escourt is being called out onto the field..."

Most of the time that I saw your royal visage, it was within a group of nobles. Now I know a lot of that time is scheduled and can't be helped. Gate, maypole, town square, chess, etc. I did see you occasionally with only 1 or 2 escorts, but most of the time that I did see you it was in groups of 4 or more. You may very well have spent more time in smaller groups or with only one escort. But I was basing my comments upon what I saw throughout the weekend.

Greetings All, A few words from Sir Michael, I have a different point of view i wish to share. I attended with Princess Emma (She's 7 and her 5th faire), from the opening gate Saturday, We stopped by the King and he took a picture with Emma. She dresses as a fairy princess. He took his time, and spoke so much to her. The King did ask me if i had a program, which I didn't and he ordered Merlin to get me one, I found him most friendly. I also went to the feast as well. It was out of this world. He plays the part well and never found him unfriendly. I was dressed in a full knight outfit, and the guv'nor role played with Emma and I at the stocks and I found him and the exicutiner very friendly as well. I also interacted with Sir Lancelot & Dwane. Both were so friendly. I also talked a bit with Morgan Le Fay as well, she was a bit hard to speak to because of her sheer beauty, but not a bit of her was unfriendly. I think Sir Trevor, on a scale of 1 to 10, your faire this year was a 20+, and the best I have attended. Thank-you for all the hard work. Emma believes in the fiare, and I use it to help motivate her in school. The fairies were outstanding as well. So, I really want to Thank You all. Sir Michael of Mentor Knight Commander & Escort to Princess Emma

Didn't get to see shows, except for Porter and Stout, Chess Match, and the first joust.. The shows are for 2nd weekend!
Chess Match was very good! I missed the very beginning, and I realize it was slow because it's opening weekend. But DANG, the final fight was great!
Weather was great... Tailgaiting Saturday morning was awesome! Wonderful to see everyone out so early partying it up!!
Got the first beer of the season at Stumbull.. And had to cut drinking till the afternoon because of everything I had in the parking lot....
Pub Sing.... Well, I'll leave that for another discussion. I want to refine my thoughts and ensure I am not allowing a bias... However, I can say that going into the weekend, I thought my main concern would be the pub not being large enough. I never saw it without an open spot.
But I am sooo NOT a fan of Parting Glass as closing song. (And not because it's not Health to the Company) Their version of Parting Glass is good in that Tommy Makem is not rolling over in his grave for blaspheming it and making it fast, yet horribly bad in that they have a dirge for closing song. I played the "Let's count the smiles on cast" game, and didn't make it half-way through my first hand. At least it's appropriate to the song.
Oh yah, and Assassins was fun. Time to revise the rules, streamline a little, and get more people playing!

First weekend was great, though I could have gone without the muggy heat on Sunday. One issue, though: WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE FINAL CANNON?? There were claims that it was fired, but I never heard it, and you could can usually hear it throughout the fairegrounds. No one seemed to know when the day had actually ended.

"No one seemed to know when the day had actually ended." Thats because it didnt, everyone just had to "temporarily" leave and comeback the next weekend, see it will go off on the last weekend last day of faire, until then you'll just have to keep on coming back and enjoy our company again!

Thank thee, truly, for the compliment, though I am sorry indeed if I was found hard to speak to at all, for any reason. I should like to meet all of the villagers! It is good to know the names and faces of those undergoing the changeover of power to me. ...And the Duke. Yes, him too, I suppose.

All in al I thought the first week was great! Loved most of the new shows. The cast this year is awesome and Bill and I had no problem approaching anyone and I was approached first by the king and queen. The only complaint Bill had was that he thought the joust was one of the wort we've ever had and I do have to agree with some of the things he had pointed out to me but I will let him explain his thoughts himself. I thought attendance was about right for opening weekend and that Sunday was slighly less than Saturday but about right. I am dreaming of what weekend 2 will hold! See you all on Saturday! Sue
