Sue...Let me clarify things here before I get myself into deep doodoo like I usually do. The reason I compared your niece to a modestly dressed Playboy Bunny was the fuzzy ears she was wearing. Most of the real Playboy Bunnies are usually wearing swim suit like attire, but with fuzzy bunny ears.
Now the Bunnies are not to be confused with the Centerfolds who are usually in the nude. Since the Bunnies work at various Playboy Clubs and interact with the patrons, kinda like Hooters girls, they are dressed for the most part, though more scantily then your niece was.
So! I hope this clears up this matter. HANK.

I myself am not a fan of any anime series. If it disappeared, I may laugh inside. I am however appalled that anyone would scowl at wearing costumes as such. I do agree that it should be at least remotely relative to the time frame that's been set, but for those that close their minds completely, there has been a time in which Japan, and China for that matter, have been historically known for there Darkest Times. So I conclude in saying that Japanese fantasy costumes should be as accepted as the medieval costumes we wear at the GLMF every year, not because of what it is, but because it stands for our rights and the freedom from oppression.

I agree fun is the goal here...and as I've said I'd rather see anime than plain clothes.(no offense to the plain clothes people-come in garb it changes everything)As to the drow I think she's wonderful very well done....I do wonder if she is Nathyera from NWN.To any who is not a D&D geek a drow is a dark elf ,usually evil, but hot Agreed. But I think Drizz't was a little Intimidated by them. Oh, man someone should come as Drizz't. Or even better, Raistlin.

occassionally is fine, but the people who dress like this need to realize that they stick out like a sore thumb. the costumes are good, but its a little bit ridiculous to dress as a character from an anime, im fine with medieval japanese garb, but bringing in a fantasy character, that has nothing to do with the times kinda urks me. and im not saying they cant dress like that, im just ranting; that and when i saw them i was like ....wah? also....link really doesnt fit in in a medieval faire lol, too many

As has been pointed out, GLMF is hardly a faire that regards historical accuracy above all else: does anyone other than me remember Heroes and Villans out of Time (2004)? We had everyone from Alexander the Great (based on a real person circa 300 BCE) to Genghis Khan (approximately period-appropriate, but from half the world away) to Lady DeWinter (a fictional character who 'lived' circa 1625 from a book written in the mid 1800s) living together with King Arthur in a tiny English village. Check Trevor's photos from that year.
And then there's the fact where we do King Arthur in approx 1200, who most likely lived (if ever) in the 6th century, in costumes that are much more Renaissance than we like to admit.
For that matter, what makes the Japanese cat and dog demons any better or worse than out much-beloved Eiko?
As Higgins pointed out, there are places to go for more strict 'historical reenactment.' I think if you're going to any event with ties to fantasy, be it a con or a faire, you need to take the other patrons with a grain of salt. Wouldn't you want the benefit of the doubt if it were you?

Divina...Yeah, I remember the hero's and Villain's out of time year. I though it was great fun. I do have to question your statement that we (GLMF) does King Arthur in approx 1200 BC?? Sorry, no E, that is just political correctness crap. While King Arthur, if he did indeed exist as an actual person, and some believe he was based upon a Roman Commander stationed in England around the fall of the Roman Empire in 400 AD. has always been set in a time period of the early middle ages or dark ages if you will, but never before the birth of Christ.
Depending upon which "expert" you listen to, most seem to believe the "Dark Ages" lasted from about 476 Ad to 1000 AD. The "Middle Ages" from 475 AD to 1450 AD. and the "Renaissance Period" was the 14th, 15th, and 16th Centuries. As you can see there is a bit of overlap. And our faire encompasses it all. We have Roman Legionaries, Vikings, Knights in shinning armor, the three Musketeers, everything. And I for one am fine with it. If you want historical accuracy go watch the History Channel. If the object is to just have fun, well go to the GLMF.
As for the Japanese cartoon characters....Well, if that is how you want to come dressed, fine with me. Just don't be surprised when the majority of the people have no damn clue what/who you are suppose to be.
HANK.

Have fun one and all! With characters like this in the cast:
The Fae Ogre...Andrew Fabiny Dulcimer Elf... Jana Hucker Elf...Candalyn Fusselman Tree Sprite...Brittany Harry Fire Sprite...Kari Russel Water Sprite.... Ashley Craver Pixie...Christina Ranelli Pixie....Khadija Djellouli Pixie....Amber Roberts Imp....Sarah Murphy
I dont understand why people would debate whether fantasy characters should be at the faire.
Huzzah to any paying customer! Wear what you will! ;D

My apologies, I guess I was unclear. While King Arthur, if he did indeed exist as an actual person, and some believe he was based upon a Roman Commander stationed in England around the fall of the Roman Empire in 400 AD. has always been set in a time period of the early middle ages or dark ages if you will, but never before the birth of Christ. I apologize, 1200 BCE was a typo. I have corrected it now. I know he did not live before the time of Christ. I also greatly enjoyed the Heroes and Villains out of time; I was cast that year. I was just trying to further the point that GLMF is a fantasy setting, and that no tradition should be excluded there. I was not disputing that GLMF is a medieval faire, or trying to redefine the era. I was just saying that our own story is often contradictory, and that patrons should have as much fun with it as we do.

well, how about it should be that traditional costumes from any country of the correct time period is fine, but characters that are out of time, or are a specific pre-made anime character are questionable....but it should all be determined by the person in the costume, frankly, if you have someone as inuyasha but is correct with accent, looks correct and is still able to be played with, thats fine. but having someone show up that does not play, and sticks too close to the character is a bit much for me
btw this is all imo

Sorry, I still am going to make snarky comments. Japanime costumes are dumb at a ren-faire. Please reference the great Ren Faire essay, "My Faire Can Kick Your Con's Ass".
I think Japanime is dumb. I think the steam punk trend at ren faires is dumb. (Especially since we are supposively Medieval) Although, I will planning a steam punk party soon.
So, yes, if you are in a red kimono or a giant black oilcloth duster with a scarf tied over your mouth, I will wonder what you were thinking.
Yet, you paid your ticket same as I, so do what you will.
