Well, actually, my rose of sharon is in full bloom right now. But it is around 10 years old now, and about 10 feet tall.

Wow, the garden got a cosmetic face-lift today! THANK YOU OLIVE!!!! Also thanks to Bunnie and Jezzy for helping too! ... truckload of wood chips for the pathway and bench area, ferns, and some more flowers for the garden.. *GRIN*
Yeah, I can't wait for a nice sunny day to snap a few more pictures of this. Some of the light effects on a bright mid-day are very beautiful.

Lilies of the valley will work well there and I can give a few tubers to start a patch. They will be bloomed before faire, but that's OK. Also Siberian bugloss will be blooming during clean-up but the dark green leathery leaves will look good during faire. For color during faire, we can use annual impatiens and coleus and native jewel weed.

I also mentioned to Dave before, but I am sure he forgot (as he had a lot of suggestions at the time, and I never actually posted it here so it was written down somewhere) That moss would probably be a nice addition. There are many varieties that would give a range of green hues so it wouldn't be one monotonous color.

Guys, (and ladies) Don't mean to be a "wet blanket" on your efforts here, but have any of you taken into consideration how TASTY the local wildlife might find all of these wonderful things you have planted? I mean, I hate to see you go to all this work only to come out next spring to find NO plants and a big fat ole deer standing there letting out a big ole BELLLCH!!
I know from my experience with the Cleveland Metro parks that deer seem really fond of Jewel weed for example. I'm not sure what else they may find tasty, but Olive should know.
HANK.

Good point, Hank, but jewelweed is not a fave of deer as far as I know, nor is hosta. Trillium, yes. But the local deer have enough of other more preferred stuff than to mess with a few garden plants I think. Nothing I put at my cottage has been deer chewed. It's the SLUGS that might wipe out every living thing!
Quite familiar with the Cleve Metropark deer overpopulation. They ate the woods bare of their usual foods. Ravaged the surrounding neighborhoods. Because there was no hunting in the parks nor in the suburbs and cities. Boy we had a heck of a time when we first began controlled culling (shooting) of Metropark deer!

Not a problem, Dave. This project has touched my heart and I'm only too happy to help in whatever way I physically can. I look forward to coming up here next year and seeing how beautifully it has matured. I'm sure those for whom this garden is being constructed do appreciate the thought, and will forever.

In order to get rid of slugs you need a pie tin full of beer.

In order to get rid of slugs you need a pie tin full of beer. Aye, in my garden I'd just bury beer bottles almost up to the top, and the slugs would climb right in and drown. I'd take them out after a while and the bottles would be full of them.

Yeah, the beer thing works wonders. I was just leary of suggesting it for fear we'd never get Dave out of the garden!

Oh, you'd get me out of the Garden easily. I'd have to leave to refill the pie tin.
