Any idea when the house was built? From the exterior photo you posted it looks to be a somewhat older house based on the style so I would think it strange the upstairs bathroom would only have a shower and NO tub. Upright shower stalls didn't become popular till much later.

House was built in 1890. I am sure the upstairs bathroom was different before the addition of the downstairs one.

1890!?!? WOW! When it was new ya probably had a pump in the back yard ya pumped the handle to get water, heated it on a wood stove and poured it into a tub to take a bath, and the toilet was maybe an outhouse, so yeah, it's been upgraded a bit since it was built. Probably had gas lights or maybe even candles. Electricity wasn't that common back then. Heat was was maybe fireplace or Franklin stoves. Things have come a long way.

Well, Habitat came out today and took all the old appliances, vent hoods, and a few other misc items. So, now the front room where we had it all staged is empty again. I had planned on ordering the cabinets for the kitchen, but that would require me lugging them into the front room when they get delivered. Think I will hold off another week on that. We are going to Lowes Saturday. Saw a fridge there Tuesday, that I think the wife is going to like. And at a great price. So we'll get that in the works.

Well, the kitchen cabinets came Saturday. I had Dale there to help me bring them in, but he had to go due to a minor emergency at home. Thankfully, the delivery guys were cool and hauled most of it into the front room for me. Sunday I unpacked them all and inspected them for any damage.

Feeling pretty energetic today. So I put up the fence to keep the dog in the yard today. Guess we will see how well it works later this week.

Lots of small steps getting accomplished. Finally got the patching done in the living room, so it is ready for paint. (though now the wife has changed her mind on the color) Started working on getting the ceiling light/fan installed in the living room, since there is currently no ceiling fixture in there. The bathroom floor was almost ready for tile, until I ripped a giant hole in it. It was soft and weak, and needed replaced. The wife almost talked me into letting it go, since it was right at the wall under the toilet, but I just couldn't do it. Tomorrow I will get the patch done (fingers crossed) then she can tile it sometime this week.
We bought the kitchen sink, and the light to go above it today. So closing in on having most of the purchases made. Still need to get the vent hood, and duct work for it.

Got the floor patched today. So that is done. Just got a little smoothing to do at the transition with some drywall mud to fill the gaps. Tomorrow.
Also got the yard mowed here. Thank god I have a rider. My son borrowed the push mower yesterday, as his wouldn't start. Had him drop it off at the new house. The wife wants to try mowing the grass over there. More power to her. I have zero interest in trying it.

More small projects completed. Got more of the wiring rough-in done in the kitchen. Got the water lines extended in the laundry room. Started ripping off that wood bin on the side of the house so I can patch that hole into the laundry room.
The wife started painting the living room.
With luck, both bathrooms will be done sometime next week (other than a bit of trim that can wait until later)
Sunday Dale is coming over to help pull more wire. Since that is a 2 person operation pulling from the basement, up through the walls.

Most of the little projects are done. Bathrooms are done except trim. Living room is done, except box for ceiling fan. Having trouble cutting through the plaster/lath, since they also seemed to use steel mesh up there for some reason as well. May try drilling around the perimeter and see what that gets me. Can't use the sawsall, since the floor above is too close, and the blade hits. That's the only electrical that needs done before we close up the walls in the kitchen.
Tomorrow we are renting a U-haul to go get all the paneling, beadboard, tileboard, and drywall we need. Dale still hasn't fixed the brakes on his truck, and we just can't wait anymore. Once the walls start getting covered, things should look 10 times better, and I can start thinking about putting cabinets in.
Stuff should go up quick once I get my brad-nailer dialed in so it won't go all the way through the paneling and such. Got some spiral cutting bits for my dremel to hopefully make it easier to cut out around the electrical boxes, etc.

From what I've learned watching "This Old House" on PBS is the mesh was used to give the plaster more "bite" then.
just the lathe would provide. Makes sense when you realize that is an overhead surface so you want the plaster to stick not fall on your face when you trowel it on

Turns out, the reason was the ceiling was replastered. They put plaster over the existing plaster/lath. So the mesh makes sense. And in this case, mesh was actually chicken wire.
I know this because Dale came over to help today and had a 4" hole saw, which is what we ended up using. Cut to the mesh. Snipped that out with snips, then cut the rest of the hole.

Well, the living room is done, except the ceiling box and installing the ceiling fan. "]Kitchen is moving right along "]Walls are done for now. Have to wait until cabinets are in to do the rest as I need to cut around them. Hopefully the uppers will be going in this weekend and we can start on the lowers. for the rest of the week I will be finishing the skim coat on the bedroom wall. Had loose plaster and that is the easiest way to deal with it. Then I will insulate the laundry room, and start putting the drywall up.

Well, after 2 weeks, I finally made it back over to the house. Didn't get much done. Got rid of some of the paneling scraps, and wired up a couple receptacles. But it was a start, and it felt good to finally do something. No matter how little it was.
Tomorrow I will go back to do a few more.
