Well, looks like things are really going to be interesting for pub sing this year. John and Lisa MCing it again. Cast helping perform the final song. And a new closing song. I am looking forward to it. For those unfamiliar with Parting Glass, here are the lyrics that I found online. Thought that some may be interested to learn it so they can sing along. Oh, all the money e'er I had, I spent it in good company. And all the harm that ever I've done, alas it was to none but me. And all I've done for want of wit to mem'ry now I can't recall; So fill to me the parting glass, Good night and joy be with you all. Oh, all the comrades e'er I had, they're sorry for my going away. And all the sweethearts e'er I had, they'd wished me one more day to stay. But since it falls unto my lot, that I should rise and you should not, I gently rise and softly call, Goodnight and joy be with you all. If I had money enough to spend, and leisure time to sit awhile. There is a fair maid in this town, that sorely has my heart beguiled. Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips, I own, she has my heart in thrall; Then fill to me the parting glass, Good night and joy be with you all. Though as with most faire songs, it seems there are several version that are performed. I found this one on youtube that sounds pretty good and would make a somewhat rousing pub sing song with a little livelier music uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xDB87o-njFQ(yes I realize that the music is traditional, I just picture it being different, since it will be pub sing, and the performers that are likely to be on stage doing the music)

Porter and Stout performed "Parting Glass" last night at Claddagh. Though it is a very touching song and was performed beautifully by P&S, it was very much a downer and not how I personally like to close my day at faire. I wanted a hankie at the end of the song, not another ale!
My vote stands for HTTC. I guess we shall see!

So that is going to be the new Pub Sing closing song? From just having read the lyrics you posted it sounds pretty damn depressing and hard to remember. But then you are dealing with someone who can barely remember all the lyrics to "Happy Birthday!"
I did not go to the web site you listed, as having only dial up it takes forever to download something like that. So maybe if I actually heard it sung I might change my opinion of it. I suppose I will just have to hear it performed and make up my mind. I guess if it "Really Sucks" I can always just be elsewhere at that time of day. HANK.

Well I did get to hear it. Bunnie downloaded it, only took about a half hour. She has more time to waste then I do.
Must say it is so damn depressing it should be a "Country& Western song." Someone must of taken too many downers when they wrote that one. So if that is what we are closing the day with, looks like I will be getting out early this year. HANK.

www.chivalry.com/chorusoftwo/partingglass-1.mp3It IS a bit of a "downer"...but then...it is an Irish song. I too would like to stick with "Health to the Company". I'm sure it wouldn't be stepping on Owain's tootsies in any way...I mean, I heard that song in Sterling years before Owain was ever in Avaloch and I think it would be a nice tribute since he probably won't be at GLMF (maybe one weekend?? *hope* *hope*)

I do agree with you. It is a sad song. The whole bar was very quiet, sedate and listening. Even us that knew the song did not really join in. It is more of a listening song than a getting together to enjoy the end of a beautiful, fun day song. Like I said before (on other thread), it is a lovely song but I prefer HTTC. Maybe I will hang out with Hank instead of Pub Sing.

I still think it is all in the delivery of the song. uk.youtube.com/watch?v=B-6qvP0_1CgIt can be done, and not be a downer. Besides, what is wrong with being a little sad at the end of a faire day? The day is over after all, and we are all supposed to leave.

Nah....Parting Glass is too dreary....HTTC or something else more cheerful.

Well, if the cast is to do Parting Glass, I wonder which beloved character dies during the storyline.

Now, why does anyone have to die?! It simply says he was going but they were not....doesn't say WHERE! Yeah, I'm sure that's what the lyrics mean, but couldn't 'he' just rise, stagger off stage, pass out in a heap, and , oh, be dragged bodily to the gates? You could volunteer................... ;D

This is one of the most depressing songs I've ever heard and I was left feeling so sad after P&S sang it last night. Please find something a little more fun. I'm still in favor HTTC Sue

Okay guys, so P&S did a serious, evidently really depressing version.....that was their take on it. It DOESN'T have to be everyone's!
Re-read the lyrics and then imagime our dear Axel, for example, doing a drunken, comic version. Done properly, it would be hysterical. Again, depends on who's doing it and their vision of the piece. As with ANY 'cover!' We all got excited when it was announced that Scott was taking over as ED.....don't you think we now owe it to him to put a little trust in him and let him have HIS vision??!
Change is not always a BAD thing, you know.....................

It's just eerie to associate the end of Pub Sing with a song I'd want sung at my wake. Something about that just gives me the heebie jeebies.
