Well Dill, what you said does have a grain of truth to it. We know not at this time what Axel's version of it might be, BUT...Having never heard, nor even heard of, that song till Bunnie downloaded the version Trevor posted this morning, well, THAT version is all I have to go on at the moment. And THAT version is a damn funeral dirge!
SO! I will give his version a listen the first day of Faire, and well, if I don't care for it I'm just not gonna bother with it eleven more times. Okay, maybe only nine, since Owain is suppose to be back the last weekend, so I would imagine he will do HTTC.
And Trevor, you said "what is wrong with being a little sad at the end of a faire day?" You're kidding right!? You just experienced a great day, got to see some old friends, saw some wonderful entertainment, pucked some rats, drank some beer, ate some great food. and now you want to go home depressed? Jeeze! Get yourself a portable DVD player the kind you can plug into your cigarette lighter, let Britny drive home and you can watch "Ole Yeller" if that is how you want your day to end. I would rather leave there on a happier note. Thinking DAMN!! That was a great day! Hope tomorrow (or next week) is even better!
HANK.

Hank. I never said I liked to be sad. But how many times have we seen a pub full of tear-filled faces during HTTC? A ton.
As for the song, I take the lyrics at their face value. Not what meaning has been attached to them over the years from where it has been used before. The song reads like someone who has had a good time having a few drinks with friends. Now it is time to go, they will be parting company, but not before they have one last parting glass of drink. Certainly sounds like pub sing material to me.

It's just eerie to associate the end of Pub Sing with a song I'd want sung at my wake. Something about that just gives me the heebie jeebies. Don't think I will ever have that problem. As the song I want at my wake is Enter Sandman by Metallica.

What's your point? The Parting Glass is a really nice song. I've got different words. When I find them I'll post them.

Admittedly I too far prefer health to the company. The other is far too sad.

This may peg me as a newbie, but I've heared "Health to the Company" at every pub sing I've ever been to. Just won't feel the same with out it. I know that Owain will only be there on the last weekend, but he is not the only Faire performer to have recorded the song. I believe it also appears on one of Axel's cds. I t seems to me that "Health to the Company" has built strong feelings of fellowship for many of the Faire regulars, and where it gives us hope that we may actually meet again this new song will just leave us feeling depressed that the day is over. My vote is against "Parting Glass."

Ahoy! Only the first 2 verses are being used. Also, it is a sad parting song (like HTTC) but certainly not a dirge. It is all in the arrangement and delivery.

Will we still be able to walk around Pub Sing, clink our glasses together with other patrons/cast, or do we just sing along with the cast?
I am just wondering how this works with this song. I guess I am asking, "How much do we get involved with Pub Sings last song?"
(It can be a very pretty song. I have now listened to a couple versions. I will have to bring the lyrics with me to Faire.I guess I am just partial to HTTC.)

We are patrons. We can do what we want.
And believe you me, I plan on clinking mugs with everyone else just like always.

I know we can do what we want I just meant, is there any particular place in the song? I know we can walk around and clink glasses........Are there spots in the song that maybe we do something else? Like the one spot HTTC where we bang the benches. I am just asking so I have an idea for this season. I know Scott and cast will have to practice the song and see what comes naturally. I was just wondering if at other Faires are there any certain spots in the song that get "special" attention? I know I am wording this all wrong, sorry. I know what I am thinking, just having a hard time expressing it.

I know what you are thinking as well. And depending on how the song is performed, I think this bit would be a good spot to raise our mugs and sing along. So fill to me the parting glass, Good night and joy be with you all.

I visit this site every so often to see what's new. I think everyone needs to chill a little bit. I also thinks it is great that everyone is working so hard to find a new pub song. I will have to say that I for one love hearing HTTC at pub sing. It means so much to me but not because Owain sings it but for other reasons. It was dedicated once to my family because of a death in my family and that is what I think of everytime I hear it no matter who sings it. It brings back great memories for me. Which is one of the reasons I don't like to miss pub sing. I will say we shouldn't be so fixated on any one song as our new song. Remember Scott and Larry will have the finally say if HTTC will be song or not. I just feel we shouldn't get so worked up over a song when it still maybe HTTC. Just my thoughts though!
