"Tamburrino said the trustees' only goal is to protect the health, safety and welfare of township residents, saying "I can't think of any financial benefit the township derives directly from the Great Lakes Medieval Faire."
I bet this guy still thinks the world is flat too....Sheesh!

I sell that paper at my work in Niles, so the Warren/Howland/Niles/Youngstown area will know about it ^.^

"Tamburrino said the trustees' only goal is to protect the health, safety and welfare of township residents, saying "I can't think of any financial benefit the township derives directly from the Great Lakes Medieval Faire." I bet this guy still thinks the world is flat too....Sheesh! Well, actually he is correct. I know, I hate to agree with the guy, but the statement about no direct financial benefit is correct. The only taxes the township receives is from property tax. They would get that, regardless of who owned it or what they did with it. Now, if they let Larry put permanent structures on the site, then that would raise the value of the property and in turn increase the taxes paid.

Just got done reading it. A very nice article. Well researched. And really illuminated the positives of the faire. Got to the crux of the current issue, and showed just how inane it really is.

True and I understand that as well...directly affects...but his callousness regarding the welfare of his neighboring towns doesn't speak highly about him either. No township is an island unto itself. Everything that happens around it affects it….the Butterfly Affect as it were and yes, as a lawyer I’m sure he’s used to splitting hairs to the nth degree. He can no doubt convince people under his “care” that the Faire doesn’t do any good for them by pointing this out but I view this as a smoke screen ploy. Things that do not change and grow, stagnate. If the money from the Faire was used to fund the Fire Department and buy equipment, then I don’t see how he can state such a thing. He has pledged himself to protect “…the health, safety and welfare of the township residents.” How do you do that by losing a Fire Department? By losing Ambulance service? Where is his care and concern for his residents if he actively shuts down the very thing that is in place to ensure their health, safety and welfare? I would say that the Faire has directly financially benefited the township…he just found a way to sever it in his quest to shut the Faire down.

Since I don't have inside information into goings on at the Faire, I don't know for sure, but, if he has to pay his employees like other employers do, then there would be income taxes generated as a result.
Also, although someone could call it indirect, there are many financial benefits 'directly' because of people coming into the area to go to the Faire. Those who eat at restaurants, stay at hotels/campgrounds, shop at stores, buy gasoline--the list goes on. If they're only in the area, doing those things, spending that money, because of the Faire, that's pretty 'direct'.

Mickey. All that is true for the COUNTY. The TOWNSHIP does not derive any income from any of that. They do not collect sales tax. They do not get anything from income tax either. And there are no businesses inside the township. So, as you can see, the township gains nothing.
I'm not trying to argue his point for him. I am trying to make people here understand that all these arguments will not work with the trustees. They collect property tax, and that is it.
They are great arguments for the county commissioners, who hold the purse strings on the enforcement end of anything the trustees manage to cook up.
