Ahoy! I hope everyone is enjoying the Holiday season! Looking forward to the GLMF 2009 season, we are putting together plans and ideas. Last year we were going to try a bagpipe competition but I was unable to make it work as I started the process too late. This time I want to start early and make it work. I am beginning the process and thought I would put out this thread to invite your thoughts and ideas. Perhaps with your help, we can find the best ways to utilize more of the local talents. The idea is to have a 2 day competition on Celtic weekend (but not on a weekend where a pipe competition is already going on). If you have some thoughts or connections or experience with this type of event, I would love to hear about them. I will visit this link often and perhaps together we can have an extra special competition. I look forward to your postings. HAPPY HOLIDAY!!! -scott hendricks www.axelthesot.comp.s. the GLMF 2008 season ROCKED!!!

Please NOT on the same weekend as the Cleveland Irish Cultural Festival!!!
.. Which is July 24-26, 2009. No excuses for not knowing when it is now!! <evil grin> (www.clevelandirish.org)
It may also be a good thing to get ahold of the Cleveland Police Pipes and Drums, and the Cleveland Firemen Pipes and Drums.. Dunno if they'd be able to help, but some may want to compete!

You may want to check with Chief James McBride of Lakeland Community College Police Dept. He is an avid bagpiper. There is also the red hackle's out of Berea, OH as well. Sir Michael

You may also try the 87 TH Cleveland bagpiper's www.87thcleveland.com/ (who compete in Lorain) Or, get a hold of the Scottish-American association of Cleveland and the Ancient Order of Hibernians (Irish), as I'm sure some of their member's would have an interest in competing. Will this be an event for individuals or for pipe bands or (hopefully) both?

As far as what kind of contest it will be is up in the air. Looking over conventional pipe contests, I have found they are very complex with their grading systems, multiple catagories etc... What we want is some sort of looser ruled event that could incorporate individuals as well as bands (although the bands would need to be small. maybe up to a certain number like 5 or so). The idea really is to give pipers an event to help show off their talents and introduce more people to the Great Lakes Medieval Faire as well as make our Celtic Weekend something extra special. Maybe it could be something other than a contest. I'm looking into and open to all possibilities. Thanks for your input so far. Please keep it coming!!!

Well, really, how many people do you know that know any bagpipe music other than Amazing Grace? If it's not fun for the masses, you're mostly only going to get those that are already interested in the pipes.. So a competition based solely on musical ability may not be the "best" option..
I think we need to involve audience reaction as at least a factor, because a less musically gifted piper that can really get the crowd going would be the one that gets remembered... Umm.. Wait a second.. A piper that does pop song covers would prolly win that part!!! (And that's not necessarily a bad thing either!)
Yet the idea of a "Bagpipe Idol" scares the bejeezus out of me...

Let me begin by saying I am not a big Bagpipe fan. If I hear Barret play once that is quite enough of that noise to last me for 6 weeks, so the thought of a zillion bagpipes caterwauling all over the shire is a bit overwhelming for me.
With that out of the way, I have to say BeerBlessing brings up some interesting points. As he stated, you will need to make this of interest to the masses and not just to bagpipe aficionados.
Maybe you should hold it back at the chessboard or joust field so they do not drowned out every other stage in the shire so that those of us who feel like I do can simply catch other shows (and be able to hear them)
Thats my two cents worth on the subject.
HANK.

If I can cast a vote on where the competition should take place I vote for the joust field!!!!! it is a wide open space and it is not as isolated. some of us can not get al the way to the chess board for something like this. besides with the pub sing being moved we at the joust end of the shire miss having the music.

Joust field would work.. I'd be afraid that if it were at the Chessboard, that few people would go there.. At least the Joust Field is on a main route and can get passers-by..
I would not want to see it at Stumbull, but the sole reason that it's Celtic weekend, and having it there would bump another guest act we can put there!!!
