Ok....what is the deal on jousting this year? Real or Fake? I hear rumors that we are having fake jousting this year (ie...MIRF jousting...theatrical blood, planned falls (even if they didn't get hit) hollow spaghetti filled lances on ponies). I'd just like to know so I can avoid that area and watch other shows instead.

Joe. I doubt they have even settled on a jousting troupe yet. As Scott already posted, we fully intend on having a joust. We are in negotiations with several jousting companies at this time. So just hold your horses and we will announce the joust team as soon as we finalize some things!! That was posted about a month ago. Historically, they really haven't had the jousting troupe sewn up until Larry comes back from Florida. So, I doubt we will really know anything until around May. I hear lots of rumors, and very few of them ever turn out to be anywhere near the truth.

I just feel sorry for Scott (or any ED) tho....he can only get what Larry tells him to get. I just get the feeling that the joust is the least invested act of the faire when it should be the premier act....

Actually,, the joust is usually the highest paid act at the faire. Which is one of the reasons things have been in flux with our joust so much over the past few years. Trying to get as much bang-for-the-buck from it. Also one of the reasons I believe Larry likes to have a say in it. It is probably the single largest investment in the faire every year. Also, most of the joust troupes seem to be from the Florida area. At least that is where a lot of them winter and train. And, gee, where is Larry in the winter? Yep, Florida. So he is closer to the sources, and probably gets a lot more word-of-mouth down there about who is doing what. Also, with the shear number of faires going on down there in the spring, he can get to see some of them 'in action' long before our season begins. (these last thoughts about things in Florida just hit me this very moment. I don't have basis for these theories, but they do make some sense.)

"Why's" and "Wherefor's" aside...you'd think that acts (crowd drawing acts) would have been secured after the close of Faire...not wait until 2 months before it opens and negotiating...but then, I guess I'm just pro-active, not RE-Active...

I wouldn't count on a joust at all. I remember last year's attempt by Larry to do away with the team after a week or two into fair. It seemed to be a constant battle to even have them there.

I heard that in order to make the joust appeal more to kids, you know, more of this family friendly stuff, they have hired a troup of dwarves riding mini horses. That should make it more down to Earth as they will be closer to the ground after all. Could be fun to watch, we will just have to wait and see. HANK. Now that you've all damn near had a heart attack, don't believe a word of that crap...I just made it all up.

realist, you ought to check twice on where you get your information from. I was with Larry and a few others last year when we first were introduced to the jousters. He never had a problem with them not even a few weeks into faire. Never even wanted or said he was going to get rid of them. The only thing we ever heard was that they were hard on the squires who were young men helping them out. Most jousters (not all) think they are God and don't want to follow the same rules as everyone else. That is the biggest problem with the jousters. Nothing else. I will however let Larry know what he says and thinks. I happen to talk to him often.

Paw-leez, as if you guys know anything.
Larry happens to hold me in the closest of confidence and I know for FACT that the joust this year is being replaced by a medieval dog show. Jousting is old hat, what the people want these days are dogs, dogs, dogs. From pampered bull dogs to tiny purse dogs—canine entertainment is where it’s at! The dogs will dress in medieval garb and be required to demonstrate skills that a dog of the period would need for various tasks—including fox hunting and falconry.
I, for one, never liked the joust and welcome this new addition to the faire with open arms and an open mind. I hope you can all do the same.
