I don't have much to comment on about opening weekend because I was tied-up working as a squire at the joust.
However I wish I could have seen the 3:30 show on Sunday from the stands. It's hard to watch what is going on when your working. But the 2 knights that jousted each other at that joust are both world champion jousters. And from what I saw they were hitting hard. Lances where flying in all directions. I was impressed. I haven't watched a joust in several years because I was sick of seeing staged falls. This is the real deal here. The only thing that would help improve the joust was if we could get a few more squires that want to be there. It is not as easy as people want to think that it is. Plus most of us that did squire this weekend only just learned what we needed to do that day (1 hour before show time). No dress rehersals.

Lady Leo -
Nothing like a "dry run" when you're dealing with 2-ton horses and flying lances! Having squired when New Riders was there, I can tell you that it will get easier for you once you get through it a few times and learn the flow, what each jouster's preferences are, and each horse's personality quirks. But there will always be surprises and you'll always be tired at the end of the weekend!!
Hang in there and enjoy.

Outstanding over all! Really really fine!
Was thrilled to see Fool Hardy back. I can't tell you how much! And now they have a dog... sigh..
Cast is looking great! A special pause for the shepherdess, who throughout the WHOLE hot day, was so nice to my hot sticky little girls. It's easy to do it at the beginning, but at the end of the day as well! Thank you so much!
And can I say how much I enjoyed the music RINGING through the shire? I just did.

Lady Leo. You will be happy to hear that they may have found 3 or 4 volunteers on Sunday to squire. Don't know how many will stick it out, but there is hope.

Bah....she's been around horses all her life, so the horses are nothing for her...it was just dealing with the jousters and the armor... *snerk*

Never said they were - animals are almost always easier to deal with than people anyway!
(Then again, you've never met my psycho-cat! Right, Hawise??!)
Oh, and yeah - not "2-ton" horses. Duh - those would be some dang HUGE animals!!

My 2 cents: Most wonderful to see everyone again! I have a "Faire family" a few years ago, I wouldn't know what that was! Opening weekend for me was busy with the joust too. I would like to thank BlackKnights wife, ladyLeo, for all of her help. Some people I have talked to don't seem to like this years joust. ladyLeo is right.......This is the real deal! This is full contact, no holds barred, in your face full contact jousting. No fake blood, no chasing each other around with oversized hammers, no back flips off of horses. Tournament jousting. A special "Thank-You to all of you great cast members who are squiring too! I know alot of you have other things that you could be doing! Great, friendly group, and I'm glad I getting to meet/work with some of you. Now I have got to get out and about in the shire and check everything out!!!! Allyn
P.S. Yes please see the joust more than once, different pairings of knights, etc. It's not always the same. It will only get better.

Thoughts from an out of towner/invader: Opening Day was fabulous! The highlight for me is the same as many others I see here, Emuzeki. How friggin awesome are they? I saw 2.5 of their sets. I am definitely a fan.
I sat thru a Hack & Slash show (with Morwyn and Beer Blessings) and naturally found them very funny. But I couldn't help but notice the differences in their act here as opposed to when I saw them at MDRF. Hack explained the tweaking, which made sense. I'm not complaining - just making an obeservation of the differences.
Best of all was seeing so many friends, new and old. So many Pittsburghers make the trek to Avaloch because this faire is just so darn good! The vendors are plenitiful with great prices, the entertainment rules, the cast is great, and the local playtrons are the best.
I hope many of you make the visit to morelandshire when it re-opens August 25th!

I knew what to expect and I also knew what I had to do. This weekend is going to be difficult though. The head squire for the troupe will not be there so it falls to me and a few others to try and make things run smoothly. I guess they have more faith in my abilities then I do. Let hope we can do it.

I want to see this "real" joust! I did see someone in glistening armor briefly at beginning of Pub sing Saturday. He looked very impressive.
BeerBlessing: you can get whole large LOCAL Melrose or Mutsu apples and whole bananas from MOI at Black Ox Cottage or from the oxcart if we are near Renboots in the morning. Creekside Market, run by my friend Tippy, has his stand with fruit cups, veggies, smoothies behind AirChairs by the swings.

I loved opening weekend. Aside from the issue with the faire programs it all wen so smoothly it was a joy to watch. Highlights... - E Muzeki
- Rogues
- Joust...though we need more people to get the crowd riled up. I gave it a good go myself.
- Maidens IV
- Silent Lion
- Tinkers
- Pooka...Pooka...Pooka
- And all my faire friends.

Lords and Ladies!
I have finally recovered from the first weekend and so I thought I would throwing in my .2 pounds. This weekend was indeed one of the most fantastically fun opening weekends I have experienced. Though it was unfortunate that Sunday was a bit slow, those who were there seemed to be having a blast. For this upcoming weekend, I invite everyone back to our camp as we will be pushing our entertainment a step further. Also, I'd also like to mention to those who felt the vendors lacking this year that the tinker camp aside from being an entertainment area is also a venue for 11 different vendors' wares. So if you find that special trinket you were looking for missing this year, I invite you to browse our wares to see if you can find what you were looking for. Also starting this weekend, me brother Finn and I have a surprise for everyone, and oh it's stupid fun.
I can't wait to have another great weekend with everyone in just another day.
