Figured I would post my 2 cents. P&S. First, I like you guys. Both of you are cool in my book. Now, I didn't watch much of your shows, or the early parts of pub sing. Partly because I was busy with other stuff. Partly because your style isn't really my thing. Not saying that you guys are bad, because I think you are pretty good. Just not the type or style of music I am drawn to.
You know how I run this board. I am going to let people voice their opinons. Weather good or bad. And yes, there were some unflattering comments made about your behavior and performance. But I don't think there was anything said that was out of line. They were merely stating their opinion.
And yes, it has been clarified that some of that opinion may have been based on misinformation. But that I think has been cleared up now. If there aren't any other acts there to perform, of course that only leaves you guys to perform for pub sing. Then you are left trying to squeeze everyone in the last half of pub sing after their shows are over and they have made their way to the pub. It can't be an easy position to find yourself in. I thnk you did a pretty good job of getting the performers you had on the stage.
But you should also know by now that lots of people have lots of different perspectives on things. And a lot of patrons don't care about how or why. They just want to see their favorite act, and if they don't they run thier mouths. Especially at a pub sing. Which by nature involves the pub, and the alcohol served. Which further blurs the perceptions. What I am trying to say, is that you can't please everyone. And you shouldn't even try. People are going to complain no matter what you do, or why you do it.

Partly because your style isn't really my thing. Not saying that you guys are bad, because I think you are pretty good. Just not the type or style of music I am drawn to. Yup, what Trevor said. Everyone has their own musical preferences -- for example, I have a coworker who attends every Dave Matthews concert she afford to travel to, and I have no desire to do that! Doesn't mean that Dave Matthews sucks, just means that I don't choose to spend my time and money that way. I remember hearing you guys do "If I Was A Blackbird" last year when you were playing in the lanes, and I thought it was a gorgeous rendition. Somebody else might prefer Owain's version - to each their own. Now overall, I did feel that pub sing had a different "atmosphere" to it this year, and I didn't have as much fun. Maybe it was me, maybe it was the crowd, maybe it was a combination of factors. (And part of it is the change to a more "family-friendly" pub sing that started....last year? The year before? I still miss the bawdier songs and jokes that I'm sooooo ready for by the end of the day! ;D ) Respectfully, Erin

I always wondered why musical acts were so “different” in our Shire than other Faires...a few withstanding...Owain has a crowd just as much here as at his Home Faire...and E-Muziki packed them in as well...but the difference between The Pirates Royale at GLMF and at MDRF are like night and day...same thing with the group that was playing at the Drift Inn (not sure what named they used here...Mudpuppies?) but at MIRF, they totally kick ass at The Jouster Pub...
As for P&S...you guys ROCK...plain and simple...You ROCKED at Claddaugh’s’....you ROCKED at GLMF...it wasn’t you guys...it the audience base as near as I can figure. I love the songs you play...Well...maybe the IRA song hackles me a bit...damn religious groups...all of you out I say! Out! Out! Give Ireland back to us Pagans! Oh...uh...where was I?? Anyway...you’re songs are the songs I learned as PUB Songs from a long list of great performers starting with Dermot Sommerville at the ol’ “Derby and Flask” to the Pub Sings at Sterling and Maryland Faire. I can only tell you how Dwyn and I got into singing those songs and it was at Sterling when they listed a “Rogue’s” Pub Sing where they taught you all the fun, bawdy songs and the “lowly” cast members...(thieves, grave digger, wenches, and usually a drunk Cleric) would lead the audience in the songs (Good Companions, Maids of Bedlam, Wild Rover, All For Me Grog, Roll Your Leg Over, Maids When You’re Young...etc). Offered later on in the day was the “Court Pub Sing” where the “higher” cast members, the Mayor, his wife, the Sheriff and some Court people, would teach the audience more “proper” songs (The Keeper, Bonny Ship the Diamond, Maids of Amsterdam, Spanish Ladies, etc...) So by the time FINAL Pub Sing hit...people had a good idea of the songs that would be played and the whole cast would disperse themselves through the crowd to help along...especially with “Good Companions” which kinda would turn into a contest on who could do their verse the fastest...
My point...yes...my point is...It’s not you...IMHO....it’s “them”...and as folks pointed out, to each their own taste in music....but rest assured I trust John, I trust his judgment and his faith in you guys...trust as well that you are appreciated for the time and effort you guys put in your shows...it is a labor of love and I personally thank you for your dedication and sacrifice.

Well, I PM'd those concerned earlier but I'll add my tuppence here too. My OPINION is that a couple of comments delivered earlier were not criticisms, were destructive and not constructive, were personal attacks, and were offensive. As I'd said earlier I do feel that this is not a forum for bashing and I hope I don't see it again, but people being who they are, I probably will. That said, yes indeed everyone has different taste in the arts (it'd be a boring world if not!), and it's wonderful that we all have a forum to express our opinions. But to echo what Droolin' Jack said, it is pointless to express feelings based on ignorance, based on hearsay, here as in life in general, and only causes hurt and resentment.
Now, for the POSITIVE - my own OPINION is that you two are talented musicians with an enjoyable style. I personally enjoy the kind of music you do, as I have told you both. I know how VERY hard you both worked this year, and am amazed at your stamina - you always performed as if you were fresh and rested. Yep, as m'dear Morgan said - you guys RAWK!!

In Defense of "P&S" (aka Vinny and Richard)
i thought they were great!! and being a musician myself i think it is unfair to wantonly bash anybody with negative comments. i find it especially disrespectful to do so in regard to somebodys character.
i hate to get biblical here but i will. it goes back to that verse i cant even remember it but it says "why point out the speck in your brothers eye without removing the plank in your own eye?" Point being, we all have our flaws about us. it happens. were HUMAN!!!
look i am not the worlds greatest guy and i dont claim to be. if you wanna know about my personal flaws feel free to ask me personally i have an interesting story about my personality that could have cost my army career!!
For Richard... I think he is one of the greatest guys i met. i mean i asked him if he could show me the chords to "Health to the company" and after a pub sing out of the kindness of his heart. he did, he took five minutes out of his busy schedule to do so, thats very selfless in my book... and that is a song i have been unsuccessful at for 4 years!
to both Vinnie and Richard: I am glad to have met and i am honored to call you "friend" and i hope that we have many wacky (mis)adventures together in the future!!

My criticism for P&S: The vocals on Unchartered Waters needed upped in volume a bit! I want loud vocals for my drinkin' songs!
E Muzeki and Maidens IV are great to sit and listen to. However, Porter & Stout has been the only act to get me to stop what I'm doing and come over when I hear a certain song, and sometimes when I just hear them go on stage. (Yeah, I've stopped in mid-conversation a couple times.) A large part is their song selection. Another part is that it seems they are playing to have fun more than playing to get their music out there.
My only criticism for E Muzeki is that I have heard their take on Misirlou (The song from Pulp Fiction) in every set I've caught. I like when musicians change it up, because each show will be a bit different. I hate it when I know the songs ahead of time, just because each show is identical. I never know what song Porter & Stout is going to do until they tip it off with their intro. Sure, they have some songs they do more often than others, but I've walked by numerous times over several weekends, and had to do a double take because they're playing yet another song I like, and didn't realize they play.
Or maybe I like 'em just because they're next to the pub and I dig drinking songs.
Hrmm.. Something I'll have to try next year.. There is commonly a group of us folk on the side of Stumbull opposite the stage. Perhaps we could snag them every once in a while between sets (or just Vinny if Richard is doing storyline stuff again) and have them lead a drinking song or two pub-side! Not only would it be fun for us faire folk for the occasional boisterous boozing accompanyment, but also entertaining for the "mundanes" to see a group of garbed people all singing at the pub! Even better if we can get them singing too! That'd be a BLAST!

Cpt Morgan. This idea you have for serving ale at a pub is great! you should patent that... or you should get a rum named after you!

I agree people are entitled to their opinions, different strokes and all, but I feel some of the comments made about the the group's character were way out of line.
Now I'm no expert when it comes to contracts, entertainment schedules, and running faires in general, but even *I* realized that everything happened for a reason, and I just for the life of me couldn't see these guys hogging the stage for themselves, especially from Owain!
I agree P&S are better suited to the Drift Inn because of its theme, but I enjoyed watching the shows at the Stumbull. I raise my glass to them....long live the music!
