This came through on a SCA livejournal group, and I thought I'd post it here in case these people try to contact any of the groups who perform at our faire. I know some of them check in here. The victims in this case were the Brobdingnagian Bards. To find out more check out the link: www.marcgunn.com/2007/10/warning-to-musicians-internet-wedding.shtml

Well...hate to be a wet blanket, but the fault is all their own. They should have only accepted a money order or bank check. Sounds like a personal check was sent.
So...warning to all musicians....accept only cash, money order, or bank check.
Problem solved.

Oh yeah. This is a common scam. Also, don't trust money orders either. As they can be faked also. Usually this scam involves a western union money order
Almost all money orders should be treated like checks. Wait 7-10 business days to make sure they clear.
Also, beware that there are also people counterfeiting certified checks also.
IMHO the next best thing to cash, is a postal money order. You can take them to any post office, and find out imediately if they are any good.

Hmmm....I thought they were watermarked so they couldn't be counterfeited...
but yes...I forgot about the postal money order...those are the best but I think they cost more to use.

Oh, MO's can be faked by a common technique called check washing. While there is a watermark, special paper, etc. - the ink is what isn't special, and can be removed with the right type of chemicals.
Many companies have switched to a new type of ink that smudges and smears when any type of chemical or compund breaking substance is applied, so I think in a year or so, it will no longer be possible.
However, there is only one company that is making am ink pen available to the common folk to use for such purposes, and that's Uniball - they have a pen out you can buy at Office Max or the like and it's impossible to wash the ink out of a check or document once it's on. It's a little pricey, but it's worth it to prevent such scams from happening.
