Just make sure it is to scale. it is really hard to find your way around when half the map is one size and the other half is another. it is really bad when someone who knows the site by heart and could walk it is thier sleep gets lost using the map!

Funny you should bring this up. Britny and I have already been working on something. She has completely redrawn the paths already. I have a complete overhead aireal map. I just have to find time to scan her drawing. Overlay it on the overhead, and see where things need some adjusting and tweaking. Here is a very small version of the overhead that I have done. Actual image size is about 20" x 17"

Thinking as a new patron...
Porta-johns Money Exchange ATM First Aid Pubs An Icon to designate the food and beverage places
Specially marked areas: Joust Field Archery "Kiddie Land" Chess Stage
Perhaps an icon for the entertainment stages, and an icon for the musical stages. Icons not for individual acts, but for the type of act. That way, if folks want to catch the musicians, they can pick them out faster.

Trevor....where did you get that arieal shot from? I go to Google Earth and part of it is fuzzed out. I got it from here. It was a lot of work. I took screen caps of each segment. Pasted them together. Then I took more screen caps to past over the watermarks. Took me the better part of 10 days, working at it fairly steadily.

Pittsburgh's map is quite good, containing many of the features above. Plus, the map folds nicely on the reverse side of the program. All one sheet, plain and simple.

Trevor - be careful with the overlay of the drawn paths with those images. Obviously, the pictures were taken before the faire was built, else we would be able to see the buildings in the foodcourt at the resolutions they have on the terraserver site. The site lists them as dated 1/1/2004, but I think that was when they were *uploaded*, not when they were taken. Anyway, I'm trying to say that while a good benchmark for some of the geographical landmarks, it would be all to easy to end up having things in the wrong place if the buildings, paths and stages are not drawn & placed at the same scale as the picture of the topography. It would be so much easier if Larry would just hire a small plane for an afternoon flight and send you up with your camera... I'm sure you've thought of that too! ;-) Anyway, the next best thing would be for you (well, a bunch of people really) to make actual measurements of distances and building sizes and ratios, to then put things to true scale. Maybe that is a project that Brit could do for her math class, or heck, even take the whole class out there and have them do it as a project. If it wasn't distance prohibitive, I'd try to slate my geometry classes for a fieldtrip out there and have them do it. Sorry if I'm sounding all anal retentive about it. I guess that's the math teacher in me coming out to insist on proper ratio conversions for a technical drawing... ;-)

I think the general gist of the area would be OK as long as the stages and food courts were properly marked. That way no one will confuse old stage names with new ones. And obviously have an iconic legend for privies, ATM, cash exchange, etc.

Actually, the buildings are there. Just can't see them in that shrunken down image I posted. You can see the chessboard, the feast hall, drift inn, the outline of the stumble inn food court, the joust field, town square. And some other stuff. A lot is obscured by trees unfortunately. Though it says Jan 2004, I believe the photos are from the summer of 2003. Which was when the fiare was really shady. Before the storm of 05 that brought so many trees down. And all the others that Larry has cleared out since then. I think new photos would show even more of the paths. But as it stands now, I can make out the outline of a lot of the main roads now as there is just enough difference in the trees to be able to tell where they are.

Thanks for the input guys. It will take quite a while to have a 'finished' version, however, in a few months I hope to have the basics done. The complex part (after that I mean) will be to get all of the details of where stuff is going to be. As it gets closer to fair I may publish some 'unfinished' versions. I look forward to your input then as well. I think the end product, with your suggestions and my implementation of the suggestions that are viable, will be a great improvement on what we have had up to now.
