Well, it's getting to be that time of the week again and not a moment too soon!
My plans for this weekend include the following:
-try and catch the Archery demo saturday. -try and watch Danny Lord at some point and find out what his -show is about. -laugh... a lot. -not get too wet when it gets around to raining saturday. (we need it) -find some random patrons and get them involved in general silliness. -help continue a really horrible practical joke I caught wind of just before close on last sunday (details are top secret)

Couple things I should mention before 2nd weekend gets here. Been meaning to post about them, but haven't gotten to it (sorry) The faire has the show schedule on the website now. www.medievalfaire.com/dailyGrid.htmNote - the change in time for Pub Sing. They have made it longer due to popular demand. (and those that missed it - it's back on Stumble again!)

Observations, 1- No street interaction. BOO HOO 2- Chess match NO AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION! 3- TINY CAST..
In lieu of professional acts, why do we have cast running like idiots from stage to stage?
Sparse, I am used to a cast of 70+
major major changes are needed and delegations are severely needed.
Alot of Empty areas,
Another thing just came to mind,WHY is cast on stage during Pub Sing? They should not be CLUMPING who ever is in charge is doing a piss poor performance! Cast needs to be mingling with the crowds, not on stage, pub sing is for the days entertainers.
A new ED is needed, Brook did an excellent job, bring him back. I'm saddened to see what is happening. Heads up,move it into a positive direction.

Lady Catherine, I agree. The cast should not be making up for lack of entertainment. I didn't see any street interaction. The lanes were bare of cast besides them running from show to show. That has to be exhausting. They're all so nice, and usually under appreciated, but they're a street cast, not a 'stage cast' like a lot of other faires.
I do think they should have a bit of time on Pub Sing stage. They do put a lot in for pretty much nothing. They get a meal ticket. That's it.
But yes, a new ED is definitely needed. I know change happens, but this? I don't think this change is good. The morning show was boring, scenario was a drag and chess? I've seen these actors in chess matches for years, and they are so much better than that! Two fights were good, both involving the guy with the eye patch (I can't remember his name and if I do, I can't spell them) and Aeromis, and D'Artagnon. Only part of the show that was good. It's just sad that they have so much talent and it's not showing in this chess at all.
Also, what happened to being a MEDIEVAL faire? They're all in Renaissance costumes. And most of them aren't even very good. The queen's is gorgeous, but the Musketeers? The royal guards? They look drab and boring.
We need a medieval theme again. With medieval costuming. It was one of my favorite things about this faire. It was medieval, not renaissance.

I had fun this weekend. Yes, the cast is a bit thin this season. And yes, a major portion of thier day is eaten up with scheduled shows. But in between, they are squeezing in as much street as they can.
As to the fact that cast are filling stages, instead of paid performers. Not sure what the reason for that is. Reminds me a lot of the 2004 season. But we had a much larger cast to handle the load that year.

Oh, the calamity!. The faire threw in a new theme this year!. How will we ever survive?. The costumes look good, the cast is doing just fine and at least it's a story the average patron has a passing knowledge of. As for patron participation during chess... I see no reason to do it. It's a liability best avoided, and the audience is barely bothering to cheer some very good efforts. As for the cast in the streets... Do you think every member of that cast is trained to do interactive improvisation?. They are new and young, with time they will learn. Meanwhile, the vets have their hands full and are doing a good job with the volumes of work laid at their feet. I tried to fill some of that street gap this weekend (because it amuses me), the civilian patrons didn't want to interact. It was like pulling teeth to get a hello out of people sunday. There have been years where the cast was very street oriented and years where it was not. This year they have work to do. You want people in the streets, be one of them. Redshirt is playing his role and interacting, penfold is doing it too. Even if you just commit to maintaining an accent and shouting "good day" to the people you pass (in and out of garb) it will help generate activity. I am fed up with hearing opinions on what is wrong here and demands for the heads of employees on the assumption they had the final word on whatever is presumed wrong. If you don't like what is going on and love being at the faire, find a damn way to involve yourself and help fix the problem.

Last I heard .... from cast members .... Penfold is cast. Yes red Shirt is interacting, but, most of the cast knows him and feel comfortable with him.
The cast takes time to learn how to interact with patrons. They study for weeks. Yes the new cast needs practice, but most don't seem to be trying.
I see cast in clumps hanging at vendors when they are not running between shows.
There is not enough paid entertainment to fill stages so the ED had to use the cast to fill stages. The cast stage shows are not that good. Not worth $22. The cast does not have the strength to carry a big stage show. Not even the "veterans."
I understand the veteran cast are trying to hold it together. (I admire them for it.) They shouldn't have to. The ED should have had it worked out that there was enough entertainment to cover the stages. Maybe she was trying to save money for GLMF but at what cost? (The ED is Jeanette Womsley, Lady Ophelia. It is not Andrew Meade. He is fight director.)
As for chess match ..... I miss patrons on the board. I do not think it is a liability issue. The ED just chose to do it. The patrons may enjoy it more if they are involved.
I agree. Cast needs to stop clumping in the back of Pub Sing. Sit with patrons. Ask patrons to dance. Don't stand with owen for final song. Walk among the patrons. Be a part of pub sing. (Plus, it is rude of them to talk and laugh amongst themselves while entertainers are performing and patrons want to listen.)
I do not blame cast or entertainers for this. I blame the ED for not doing her job and teaching them properly how to interact and for making them do so much they don't even have time to breathe. (They had 4 months to rehearse.)

I see cast in clumps hanging at vendors when they are not running between shows. Which vendors? Because I only ever see them like that at Fryer Pluck's and Black Ox. Because they are grabbing food and getting their meal break. Have you seen the 3 Musketeer show? They carry that quite well IMHO; I'm not really a fan of the ED, but even I have to step in and stick up for her here. I don''t know how things actually worked this year, but I do know in years past, the ED was never fully to blame or praise on the stage performer end of things. Larry like to keep his hands in that part of the opperation. Since I have no idea how big a part Larry played in it this season, I am not going to lay that blame on her doorstep You do realize that it has been 6 years since patrons have been on the chessboard? We are now on our 4th ED with this policy. So, either they all think it is a good idea, or they have been told to keep it like that. Either way, audience members on the chessboard, are pretty much a thing of the past. How do you figure that? Auditions were in the middle of April. Even if everything went supper smooth they wouldn't have started rehearsing until early May. Which gave them May and June to rehearse.

This is all getting ridiculous. The ED is working very hard to put on a good show. I don't think she deserves all of this at all. The cast is wonderful like always. We have such talent there. I think everyone needs to take a breath, and relax and remember that we love coming here. It's very hurtful to see all these hateful comments. Criticism is always welcome, but not when it's hurtful and comes across as yelling and hated. The cast is doing all they can. I'm hurting for them and I'm not even on cast this year. What happened to all the fun everyone used to have? This weekend I think we should all let everything go and start anew and to come in with a positive attitude and have fun. This is an escape from reality, from all the stress and hardships that goes on M-F. Our escape should not be stressful. I won't be there this weekend, but I hope those going and performing have fun. <3 Chelsea

Everyone should just leave the volunteer cast alone. They are doing it for the love of acting for you. FOR FREE!
I also don't think you can lay blame at the ED's feet. That position is a revolving door. Anyone care to figure out why? Usually due to an owner or upper management. Don't blame the ED. There is a show, they have already made changes based on our feedback so stop trying to blame the ED. Look farther up the ladder if you think the faire is going down.
Have a great day.
