Come one, come all to see how the knights of medieval times trained to meet their equestrian foes on the battlefield. We will be demonstrating training "games" such as beheading the enemy by weaving thru poles and knocking the heads off of them, spearing hanging rings with an 8 foot lance, throwing javelins at targets, pigsticking, and jousting at a quintain. There will be a demonstration of mounted crest combat in which riders wear protective equipment while trying to knock the crest off each other's helmet. And for the really brave at heart we will be demonstrating heavy mounted combat on horseback. This is when riders must don steel helms, shields, and protective headgear for their mounts, so they can fight each other using padded wooden swords. Also, there will be a demonstration of mounted archery skills by some of our more advanced riders. We will also showcase activities performed by members of our ground crew. Ground crew help set up the games, act as ring stewards, and score keepers during events. They also have their own competitions such as seeing who can set up a game course the fastest. This is a way for people who don't have a horse or don't ride to be involved with medieval equestrian activities. Our focus today is for you to learn about equestrian activities of yore and the fun you and your horse can have participating in them at events.
We are part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) which is a not-for profit educational organization devoted to the study of pre-seventeenth century Western Culture. It concentrates on the European Middle Ages, Renaissance, and members work to recreate the arts and skills of these eras. The SCA has 19 kingdoms, which cover the U.S., Canada, Asia, South Africa, and Australia.
