I always thought it might be nice to have an enclosed "adult" pub where shows can be bawdy and crazy. I hear they have that at some other faires. An adults only area where it is understood that the acts will be R rated and if people don't like it, they can easily leave the area. No kids allowed.
Then the open air shows, where sound carries and passerbys may not like what they see, can be the family friendly shows, and the bawdy shows can have their own dominant area.
*shrug*
Just a thought.

It may be just a thought Penfold but I think it is a damn good one! I for one am damn sick and tired of the whole world turning into some form of Disneyland geared to the mentality of a 6 year old. Kids should have their area and there should be one for adults also. HANK.

I agree...the faire should be structured for adults and kids...just keep the kids (except mine) in a fake dungeon somewhere behind the chessboard stage while the adults go off and play... ;D Did I just say that aloud?

Actually, I am curious. While in the kiddie playground area behind the stage. How much of the show can actually be heard? I know from walking by, with the sound system used, it seems like you can't hear much unless you are actually in front of the stage. Which actually helps with what is being discussed here. Unlike the TT who can be heard some distance from their stage (like all the way back in fairyland) The Drift Inn Pub area seems to be rather insulated. Those sitting in the bleachers or at the pub, and some of the picnic tables can hear what is going on, but once you get out of a certain range, the show is pretty quiet. Except on some of hte sing-a-longs.

A brillant idea, Penfold! That would make almost everybody happy. I'm with Hank, sick and tired of people trying to turn the world into some sort sanitized, "shiny happy" Disneyland! I don't want to live in Disneyland, I am not a "family friendly" kind of person.

I don't want to live in Disneyland, I am not a "family friendly" kind of person. Would be a great idea. But no chance of it happening until the trustees get off the back of the faire. Nothing, at all, can be built on the faire site until the litigation has come to an end. That is why nothing has been developed in the 'new world' section of the faire. Larry wants buildings back there like there are are in the 'old world' section. But his hands are tied right now. And until there is some huge outcry to put a stop to the trustees persecution of the faire, there won't be any new buildings.

I went behind the Drift Inn pub this weekend during one of Axel's shows. I watched the children in the playground right behind the stage. I could 'hear' Axel but it was muffled. I mean if a kid is intensely playing on the pirate ship they would hear him but not "hear" him. The acoustics are such that everything is projected toward the food court. I think I would be more worried about a 14 year old passing by than the kids in the playground. behind the stage.

Glad to see everyone discussing this, and I hope the management sees the discussion.
I couldn't be at fair this past weekend but my mother was, and she overheard a few conversations regarding complaints the faire gets almost daily about the adult nature of some of the shows - not always/usually from people who are sitting in the audience, but those who are walking past.
It's important that the families w/kids have something to enjoy. But I'm in full agreement - this whole "family friendly" sanitizing attitude can go way too far. Since Larry can't build anything else on site due to the township problems, why not just re-think where some of the acts perform?? The chess stage is way-the-heck out in the middle of nowhere - why not switch the Tortugas w/Hack&Slash or some other more subtle act? You can't exactly pass by that area unintentionally, and the pathway back to the stage could be clearly marked that the area is for "bawdy, not-too-subtle" humor.
By the way, we love the Twins!!!! They have great timing and energy, they generally pull in good audiences, and we find their humor, though very adult, a lot less crude than a few of the other acts. To each their own.

Hey all. 2 thoughts on this: 1. John has said that he wants to create an "adult" area for next year, where the R shows can happen. The only question is where/how. Think about any area/stage of faire, and there is a kid-based or kid-popular thing right beside it. The only exception that I can think of is the chess board - which may be the way to go. It can seat a lot of folk, now has artificial shade, and is relatively secluded from the rest of the shire. Put a small pub back there (no need for it to be a "building", just a beverage tent with a deck underneath/attached) between chess and the Washing Well stage, and you now have an "adults" area. That's my vote anyhow. 2. On a related note about overprotective parents, check out this link: "http://health.msn.com/pregnancykids/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100142037>1=8404" See SSG - I post here sometimes! Greg

Hope they can work something out. As for the link, I've always known that. Glad to hear people are realizing it's a problem.

I agree about that link. I've been saying basically the same thing for years. And I have argued some of the same point with our local school board wheh they tried to cut recess and go to year round schooling. Kids need time to be kids.
As for the chessboard. Good idea with one problem. It is right next to fairyland. You can already hear some of the Tortugas show in there now because of the sound sytem. Imagineif it were moved right next to fairyland.
Not saying I have any better ideas, just being devil's advocate.
