Okay I agree. I was also pissed when I left the theater, but grudgingly it is still a good movie. (In my not so humble opinion.) I was mad at the choices made.
Did any other fan of the series think that the actor that played Book look like death warmed over? I wonder if he's sick.

I think that was intentional. I know during shooting he had 'other commitment' but with hollywood make-up they could have made him look any way they wanted.
I have gotten used to Joss ticking me off with his story directions. It's one of the things that I love about his writing. He makes me care so much that I actually get mad/upset when someone dies. That, and he isn't afraid to kill off main characters when the need arrises / story dictates. (I still remember the shock when Jenny was killed) The closest I have come to that kind of reaction with anything else, was when they killed Kate in the season finale of NCIS last season. The way they did it just shocked the hell out of me.

But Wash was my favorite character - if they have sequels or redo the tv series or whatever - i won't like it as much because I really really liked Wash. And it was senseless - not honorably dying in battle like you thought that Zoe, Jayne, et al were going to do. It was ...well... pointless. other than that - I was very happy with the action level and the fighting scene between the reavers and the alliance was awesome.

Well, there was a purely "practical" reason for Wash's death.....Alan Tudyk is hoping to make a go of it on Broadway!! Until the end of the month, he'll be playing Lancelot in....wait for it.....SPAMALOT. Hank Azaria needed a break.... Then he's got the male lead in a new show opposite Kristin Chenowith (not sure if I spelled that right, but she is the girl from "Wicked"). So if the show does return, or if there are sequels made, he might not be available. So maybe Joss was just planning ahead?

Actually, there was a reason for Wash's death. It was to set things up for the big battle. After seeing him die, you had to wonder if anyone else would get killed too. Without that, there wouldn't have been as much tension. It would have been another movie where the good guys look down and out, but you know they will pull it off, and all will be happily ever after. Once Wash died, all that went out the door. The kid gloves were off, and anyone could have been fair game to be next in line.
As to the way he died. That was also brilliant. So sudden. So out of the blue. And as you said, so sensless. Which is what death usually is. It also ran with the theme of the show. These people are not heroes. They may sometimes do heroic things, but mostly they are normal people just doing what they have to to survive. By having a sensless, non-heroic death (especially right after that fantastic bit of flying he did), it drove the point home (no pun intended)
As for his character, and future movies, or TV series. Just because he is dead, doesn't mean he won't be there. If you think that, then you don't know Joss too well. He has a way of pulling off resurections that actually seem to make sense. Also, if there is another movie, who's to say it won't be a prequel. One that takes place between the series and this movie. I would love to see something that exlpored Books past.

I know when Roger daltreys Character on Highlander died i was mad, but they brought him back in every once in a while as a flashback bit. they could do the same with Wash and Book.
so all in all just because the character dies does'nt necessarily mean the actor isn't open to new plot directions, they may or may not bring wash beck in flashbacks, hell they may or may not do another series. but we can still hope.

I took the movie as the portion of the series where simon rescues his sister (not shown in the series) and then the rest of the movie after the series was over. So depending on how long of a time frame between the series (simon and river stowing away) and the movie - that would be how many episodes in the tv series could be expanded on.

That was SOOOO Joss the way he killed Wash, who I am more upset over than Book. He is like, screw you guys, this is my show, you can't tell me what to do, I'll kill who I want. It upset me, beacuse he was the Xander of the group, and you can't kill Xander, who will fix the windows? Not to mention, who will play with the dinosaurs in the cockpit? I swear I was willing Mal to pick one up at the end, but I guess not hard enough.
As for prequels, I REEEEEALLY doubt it. Why? There are flashbacks a plenty. As for reserecting them, umm no. Wrong series.
By the way, my luvin' husband bought me the Serenity, The Official Companion. Good sale, it has incredible photos from the movie, sketches, interviews, Manderin translations, and oddly enough, the entire shooting script. (Even some scenes that weren't in the movie.) My favorite question was "Is the whole premise of the movie based on the Angel episode where Spike and Angel were arguing who would win: astronauts or cavemen?

Yeah - I didn't mind Book so much - since he wasn't a key player in any of the series episodes that I saw and he's kind of old. but Wash come on - why couldn't it have been Jayne.... you know.

why couldn't it have been Jayne You'd better hope that Britny is in a good mood when she reads that. She would kill most people that made a comment like that. Jayne is the best character on the show! [starts singing the ballad of Jayne]

... Ahem... "Jayne, the man they call Jayne..."
He robbed from the rich And he gave to the poor Stood up to the man And gave him what for Our love for him now Ain't hard to explain The hero of Canton The man they call Jayne
Our Jayne saw the mudders' backs breakin' He saw the mudders' lament And he saw the magistrate takin' Every dollar and leavin' five cents So he said "you can't do that to my people" He said "you can't crush them under your heel" So Jayne strapped on his hat And in 5 seconds flat Stole everythin' Boss Higgins had to steal
He robbed from the rich And he gave to the poor Stood up to the man And gave him what for Our love for him now Ain't hard to explain The hero of Canton The man they call Jayne
Now here is what separates heroes From common folk like you and I The man they call Jayne He turned 'round his plane And let that money hit sky He dropped it onto our houses He dropped it into our yards The man they called Jayne He stole away our pain And headed out for the stars
He robbed from the rich And he gave to the poor Stood up to the man And gave him what for Our love for him now Ain't hard to explain The hero of Canton The man they call Jayne....
he he he he heh heh eh heh

Darn you beat me to posting the ballad! (which Joss wrote.)
Did ya'all know that Joss wrote the series theme? If you navigate the DVD you can hear him sing it for the test. Same thing on the Buffy soundtrack for the musical.
Kat's almost favorite song is the series theme. Even Peter will sing it to her.
