Hello everyone, I wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the sword school but I'm wondering if anyone who is or was on the cast and fought in the chess match with a rapier sword whether it was your own or provided by the faire it's self if it was a stage weapon that could be used for SCA fencing as well and what brand of sword was it if you know. I'm trying to get into historical/SCA fencing and I'm looking for a good sword since all I have a stage grade swords with a "killing" tip.

The best person to ask about combat worthy weapons would be Larry Rabin, King Arthur, fight director. He would know where to send you. Most of the weapons we used were his anyways. Sarah

If you want to get into live combat with a rapier I recomend using a schlager blade. I belong to a group called the Adrian Empire where we fight with rapier and also in full armor with blunted swords full contact. I would love to see a chapter started up around the faire. For more information go to: www.adrianempire.org or my own chpater site: www.pembroke-adria.org Larry Rabin/King Arthur GLMF Fight Director Duke of Pembroke in the Adrian Empire

American Fencers Supply is a good site to get swords, particularly Rapiers. Check the armory section of the site. www.amfence.com/Another good site is Zen Warrior Armory. www.zenwarriorarmory.com/Both the sites offer completed swords, but they also sell just parts, so if you like to mix a different guards, quillions, and pommels you can. The rapier/small sword I use is pieced together from the Zen Warrior Armory. The best part of both sites is that the blades are fully replaceable, so if they brake, you just unscrew the pommel, take the whole thing apart and put in a new blade. Blades are on all these sites, but you can often find epee blades on e-bay (I just bought 3 for $30!!!) I hope this helps. -Steven

I am a member of the Blades of Brendoken, a rapier guild in the SCA in the Akron area. Brendoken has been named as an elite rapier unit at Pennsic both this year and last.
If you are looking for SCA rapier gear then I would also second the Schlager blade (diamond or oval cross section) - Do NOT get an epee.
If you have any questions regarding other equipment needed or contacts/places to come and talk to us then please contact me via PM.

Kelzar (known in the SCA as Edward of Thorn) M'Lord Edward of Thorn, I am apart of the SCA, Shire of Oakford (Norwalk) but we have no fencers in our shire and I was to be the first since everyone else does heavy. I was at Pennsic this year and at least I got to hold and feel some of the rapiers for sale that I had seen online for a change instead of just staring at a computer screen. I do like the Zen Warrior model R2 I was planning on getting the foil blade for now since I'm taking a basic foil class soon since I'm rusty from years of not fencing and the getting a Schlager blade later or maybe ask for it as a Christmas gift.
