John Davis is named as new GLMF Entertainment Director
Many of you will remember John as Sir Nigel Hack of Hack & Slash. Some of you know him as John. I’m sure that there are also people reading this who say “Sir Nigel who?” Beyond the introductions, I’d like to tell you how I feel about this change for our faire.
As a vendor, I couldn’t be more excited. I have known John since he was pre-teen. I liked him so much that I married his sister. (Just kidding Patti). I have seen him develop into a man, a performer, a husband, a father, an incredible entertainment and art director not to mention a mentor to my son. Having someone like John help GLMF is the best thing I can imagine for us.
As for his abilities as a director, simply take Tennessee and FLARF as examples. Each faire had problems before John was given the opportunity to help them get on a good track. Under John’s direction they experienced as much as 80% increase in attendance in one year. His worst, if you want to call it that, was 50% increase in three years. Many people who were there during his time with these festivals still say that things were better under John then ever before or since. He has been touted as the man who saved one of these venues from complete failure before turning it over to a permanent director.
I have an incredible feeling of excitement for all of the actors here at GLMF. My friendship with so many of them throughout my time here has become a very important part of my life. The fact that John is coming here to work with them seems like a great gift to all these wonderful people, my friends. What stands out the most in talking with many actors who have worked under John, is how they all hope to have the opportunity to work with him again. He has an uncanny ability to create awesome shows and develop incredible scenes for street. I’m sure that the following years of John’s direction will reap many rewards for the individuals as well as the Faire. I hope you all take advantage of this opportunity to spend time learning from John's experience.
Okay, here is an added bonus that many of you will be calling all your friends about if it goes as hoped. There is a good possibility that, beginning this year, there will be a partial run of Hack & Slash. Can you imagine what the press, announcing just this addition alone, may do for GLMF? There are so many people who remember and love H & S.
Add to all this the fact that because of his friendships throughout the Faire circuit, John will be able to bring acts to GLMF who have never performed here. Not only that, but he will bring back some of the lost acts we all miss so much.
The only thing I can imagine as a negative is that we may need to expand the parking area and fill up the sparse streets of Avaloch with more vendors. Wow, what a problem to have. I am so ready for this change.
