The Western Reserve Masonic Community (nursing home) in Medina, Ohio had a Ren Festival last year on their campus. It was two days long this year. Bob and I went this morning in the rain... So I thought I would comment on it in case anyone wanted to come out next year.
I was actually in a Masonic frame of mind when I planned to go and didn't think about advertising on here - silly me...
Ok - the thing is free! Parking and admission are free. Keeping that in mind and that they've only put it on twice....
They have a smattering of vendors there. The only one I recognized was the stone gargoyle seller from GLMF (one of the first booths as you walk in)
They were selling the pottery mugs with a WRMC ren faire logo so I had to get one. It was $6 and included a free drink ticket.
Refreshments: lemonade, coke, diet coke, water, sprite in 20 oz bottles for $1, coffee or hot cocca. Scotch eggs, shepard's pie, turkey legges, bbq turky sandwich with potato chips, hot dog or funnel cake.
And the Home was offering tours of the facility so I guess you could go in and order from their cafeteria although that didn't occur to me at the time. I had the bbq turkey sandwich and it was good. Bob had the scotch egg and a funnel cake, he seemed to like it. The egg is a hardboiled egg wrapped in sausage and bread crumbs deep fried.
Entertainment: They had three big tents and a very nice color flyer detailing the entertainment which was in one of the three tents depending. We saw a puppet show for kids, a dragon hatching with the exact same script as the one they have at Pitts Ren Faire only with different people, a duet playing a flute and a lute, and Brothers in Arms jousting troupe. The joust was pretty good considering the rain and such. The Home has a sitting room with a large bay window and the residents were watching the joust and the DeMolay dunk tank from inside.
They had a free archery range. It was open from 10am to 5pm. We got there at 11 or so and left at 2:30pm. The cast was from King Henry's Touring Company and King Henry was knighting everyone in sight. They had two hearalds that played a trumpet fanfare and then an announcer guy to tell everyone which tent had some entertainment in it. He also did a good job educating the public how to cheer etc. I did enjoy the joust. There also was a madrigal group in period garb. They were good.
The privies were you're average privy but then I always go for the handicapped one so it was obviously large and spacious. This is definately a take-your-mundane-kids-out-for-the-day kind of faire. I didn't go expecting very much and I had a nice time considering the weather.
i will definately post the dates for next year when I receive them if they do it again which I think the residents enjoyed and they probably will.
