When we got home from faire Saturday night, I decided that I wasn't going to post, as I left faire feeling very sad and it felt like watching a dear friend start on a downward decline. But I do feel the need to address the faire from the point of view of a child. We have an 11 year old who has loved this faire since she was 3. We were at opening gate on Saturday and she was ready to leave by 5 pm. She thoroughly enjoyed seeing old friends and catching up, and hearing everyone say, oh my goodness, look how you've grown! But that can't fill the day for an 11 year old. (Reconnecting with old friends is the grown-up's highlight also!) But several of the things she really enjoys were not there this year. Man powered rides and the mud show are 2 of the more prominent that were sorely missed. She's seen some of the shows enough that she can repeat the scripts verbatim ("In my man pants, I can do ANYTHING!" is often thrown around our house) so repeat acts don't always hold her attention, but the mud show always had some uniqueness and improv, and she loved it. And there were really no new acts for her to experience this year. We caught the chess match, and she enjoyed that.
If Kelzar and I manage to fit in an additional visit this year (not likely, but we may try), it won't be with our 11 year old, as she will be too bored if nothing changes from week 1.
My 2 cents.

Michelle, you know I LOVE THE FAIRE!!!
I was very very disappointed...As I posted way back, I was ready to leave by 3-330, and that's unlike me!
Its so very sparse ,from past vendors, and I was shocked that Sky Chairs very gone...
I'm only attending on sundays....Saturdays, are planned out, picnics, and such. In the past I would be @ faire @ front gate...Im very disappointed this year. I hope this is not the writing on the front gate...if ya know what I mean.and no not being negative, just a realist and a visionary..

Any clue what groups will be there for Celtic Weekend? I checked the Rogues' schedule, and it doesn't look like they will be, nor will Lars and his current group (Sloanwolfe). I really prefer groups like that to local pipe and drum bands....guys with some stage presence and fun music. (Not to knock the pipe-and-drum guys, they certainly have their place, but they just don't have the "faire" feel that I look for!)

I did not mean to exclude anybody on my list for getting together over this. (except Higgins but only because I don't want to mess up his vendor status) I just figured that was the short list of regulars who cover acquantance with almost all the regulars between us. But I will not allow this faire to suck without at least trying to get some of the problems fixed. (and if I had the time to spare, I would have probablyjust walked in the gate Monday and started in on it.). Somebody shout out a time and location and we will compare notes. I WAS THINKING LATER AFTERNOON JUST TO HAVE TIME TO CATCH THE PULSE.

Why don't we give it another week before we get all up in arms. This wouldn't be the first year that was thin on opening day, only to have a bunch more stuff there the 2nd weekend. I know in years past, some things are just already occupied on opening weekend. If I remember correctly, the camel usually doesn't show up until 2nd weekend.

I don't think it has anything to do with getting "up in arms"...There is no castle or fortress to storm with torches and pitchforks. As has been pointed out, the Faire has started...can't turn this ship around at this point...the die has been cast and what has been planned (or not planned) will be...Not like acts are going to suddenly be booked because other venues have alreasy booked acts far in advance. As I see it, it's really not a matter any more of US caring about the Faire...it's the other way around and I'm not talking vendors, cast, entertainment or volunteers...We haven't failed "it"...more like...it somehow feels as if "It" has failed us. Does that mean that we won't come? No...we still will and still spend money and time to support cast, vendors, entertainers and each other.

Just my very late night rambling thoughts. We got in a month early, sad to see and hear about many vendors not back. I miss Denzil, and the Photographer lady that was outstanding -- Yet, it was nice to see "new" vendors to give the same folks coming year after year, some new items to view.
We are thrilled to expand (and move OUT) more of the clothing we make. Since we don't get OUT much :-) before faire walking I only saw a few acts. Excited about the new theme's... except the Steam Punk seemed to irrated both sides, the new steam punk folks who were yelled at by drunk patrons, and the patrons who want this to stay a Medival/Renaissance Faire?
Personally I'm excited about the upcoming Christmas in July theme - Hope it works out and the humidity stays away (dream on eh?)...
Though it seemed the lanes were pretty empty by 4ish, I did peek and see some stayed for the non-Pub sing, that was nice.
OMG Diane? the GODDESS of the past at the Souvienor Booth is extrememly missed with her tremendous smile and winning ways with the kids at the faire!!!! Don't let her hide away somewhere -- She is a true Faire TREASURE imho.
Also looking forward to seeing if broken vehicles bring more folks out this weekend - Praying the weather gives us a nice cooler break so folks want to stay in the magic forest.
So glad to give hugs to our faire friends, you all worked magic on clean up too (and I ADORE the potty fairies LOL)...
Wow bakery prices raised only 3 times in 17 years, amazing as so many costs have gotten 2 high. We have worked VERY hard to keep our clothing costs the SAME as when we too began business, but this years fabric (doubled!!!) makes next years garb going to be hard to keep original prices on :-(
Night all, and Merry Christmas to you all this weekend!
