Since it is in the news and many of us are going to be in large groups, just thought I'd pass this thought along...
Instead of Purell, why not use something a tad more of “the time period” (give or take a few hundred years)
Vinegar of the Four Thieves...According to herbalist Elizabeth Kastner:
"During the height of the plague in France in 1721, it was discovered that the homes of disease victims were being ransacked. At first, no effort was made to find the criminals, since all knew they were fools, soon to die of the plague.
"As time went on, it became apparent that the thieves were continuing in their raids... and quite inexplicably, avoiding falling victim to the disease. Soon, they became highly sought -- not due to their crimes, but in an effort to learn their secret. "When they were finally captured, they refused to speak until a bargain was offered: remain silent and hang. Divulge the secret to their resistance to the deadly plague and walk away.
"It seems that the mother of several of the boys was a midwife and had a recipe which used plants which were easily wildcrafted... yet, she knew that this would change immediately if anyone learned the formula, so she swore her children to secrecy. Her sons saved their necks and shared the recipe for the disinfectant, which is still used in France to this day."
Four Thieves Vinegar Recipe: Use equal parts of the following herbs: Lavender Sage Thyme Melissa (lemon balm) Hyssop Peppermint A handful of garlic cloves
Blend ingredients in a glass jar and cover completely with organic, unpasteurized apple cider vinegar, which is available in most health food stores. Cold infuse (let sit at room temperature in a cool place) for six weeks and then strain off herbs and garlic.
You can also use it as a topical spray to disinfect surfaces -- including skin -- and/or you can take it as a tincture. All of the ingredients in Four Thieves Vinegar are either potent antibacterials or antivirals!

Thought: They said this flu was a combination of Avian and Swine Flu so...does this make it the "When Pigs Will Fly" Flu??
I'm going to Hell, I know... ;D

Just saying "Swine Flu" is enough for your choice of "when pigs fly" joke. Hey, swine flew.

Personally, I don't see what the big deal is. Let's see. So far, no one has died of this in the USA. Even accounting for all the deaths elsewhere, this is much more tame than the normal flu which kills thousands of people every year. So, why all the attention?

Personally I think its a scheme to force the economy out of this recession
By creating a mass panic people will buy more cleaners and medicines causing revenue to go up
I find the whole thing to be complete BullS**T!!
My advice... take what you hear on the news and believe the exact opposite of it LOL ;D

There has been a death in the US, a 23 month old Mexican kid that contracted it in Mexico.
If it gets bad, then we start making Captain Tripps jokes!
But really, do just what you'd do to avoid the normal flu. Wash hands, basic hygiene, don't expose others if you get sick.

Wait, weren't we all supposed to already have died from SARS, Avian Flu and Mad Cow?

I agree with Danny. I wouldn't be surprised. But, also people are too paranoid.

The media tends to make mountains out of mole hills. Your chances of being killed in an auto accident today are much greater then dieing of the flu. So just use some common sense and go about your business.
As for Capt. Morgan's recipe; Sounds interesting, but it takes six weeks to make, and by then the news media will have moved on to a bigger and better crisis to scare the hell out of us. So just go to the store and buy the Purell. It will be quicker and probably a whole lot cheaper then buying all those ingredients.
And stop listening to the news. It will only scare the Hell out of you.
And remember this little piece of advice: NEVER VISIT ANY COUNTRY WHERE THE BUZZARDS ARE OVERWEIGHT! Think about that.
HANK.

Oh I totally agree that the media is blowing this thing up just to stir up fear in people...mostly the ignorant ones...how else can you explain the Egyptian Government slaughtering 300,000 pigs even tho' it's been proven that you can't catch the flu by eating pork...oh, wait...I forgot...according to the Muslim extremists, this is Allah's way of punishing infidels...*sigh*
As we all know "sense" isn't "common"....
Interesting study showed that people that use hand sanitizer are three times as likely to get sick than those that just use hot water and regular soap...something about one of the ingredients in stuff like Purell that also kills the good bacteria we have on our skin...so, soap and water is fine by me.
Dang...6 weeks? I better start now! It just sounds like an interesting concoction and the fact that it can be used internally as well as externally is pretty cool...I've also been told that if you mix it with coconut milk, it makes a pretty good salad dressing...go figure...

The Liberal Media focus's on Mass Hysteria..
Unfortunately those of US that have a constant Public working environment, have cause for concern, but, I can count on both hands of my 25 yrs of working where I do, I quickly absorb what my colleagues have..no kidding. Even my PCP agrees with me.

Gonna die of something, sometime. If it turns out to be the flu, well, so be it! I refuse to worry, and I'm certianly not about to panic. Besides, considering the way people drive around here, there's a whole lot better chance I'll be taken out by some idiot who shouldn't have a tricycle permit but drives a damned bus! Came within inches last night.

Oh Lady C....
The "Liberal Bias" is dwarfed in comparison to the bias towards sensationalism, and towards dumbed down topics with no pertinent content.
Take a recent example: How is some police chief getting caught in a sex act with a guy in a park defined as liberal? No, it keeps people tuning in, not voting Democrat. And by tuning in, the tv station makes money.
Mass media does tend to lean towards the left on social issues, like gay marriage. But since when did a gay couple in Massachusetts affect your life, past some topic of conversation?
But mass media leans towards the right on economic issues, like free trade. Sure, these things are harder to understand, but affect your life much more directly, and a whole lot more subtly. That "free market" thing means that low skilled jobs get exported, and rank and file Americans are left without jobs. Which causes unemployment to rise, and by extension reduced tax income, and increased burden on said tax money. Now extend that scenario in the downward spiral that it creates, and what do you have?? Oh yeah, 2009.
So, the media goes left on things that don't affect you as much, but right on the ones that do. All the while those big stories on glow-in-the-dark puppies, which won't affect your life, distract you from the hard-to-understand ones that will.
Glow in the dark puppies. Some new sex scandal.. Are yous kids safe at school?.. OMG, Lebron James wore a Yankees hat!.. Is Brittany Spears making a comeback, or has she forgotten to buckle her kids in again?..
Compare that to what Congress is doing. How high are C-Span's ratings? Oh wait, C-Span has ratings?
That "Liberal Media" thing is hooey. "Sensational Media" is the proper term. Give your money to the tv station, because that's all the tv station is there for.

Hi All, Sir Michael just checking in. As you may or may not know, I work at a Hospital and sit on it's pandemic committee. I have been getting updates day in and out each day. The simple fact is...good news is the fed's are moving supplies & drugs around so that if we should need them, we are prepared. The bad news is the news agencies are hyping this H1N1 thing so much, a panic is being created by them and their news reports. Although the CDC guidelines of washing, washing and more washing your hands will help, we are really not a pandemic or even close to it. CDC stated the US usually sees about 3,000 deaths caused by the common flu each year so 1 death is not alarming. Thanks to all the news people my emergency room saw so many wacho's who thought they had the H1N1 of Friday, we were backed up for hours. Please use common sense and don't panic. We will all be fine. Take care and I will keep you all posted if anything develops. Just stay calm. Sir Michael
