You're all right on that perspective thing. Owain does indeed do a marvelous version of HTTC, but MY first exposure to it was my third year in cast, waaaaay back in the stone age, when that was the cast's song that we sung as a group to close pub sing! ( Back then, the cast singing traditionally closed the day.) So...it's all in how you view it.
And I LIKE Metallica's version of 'Whiskey In The Jar', though not as well as Tempest's! ;D

Anyway, if you guys don't like the idea of Owain's version I'll just have to belt out the original by Henry VIII: Pastyme with Good Companye. ;-) That would be a great song for pub sing! I love the Blackmore's Night rendition; come to think of it, it would be wonderful if they performed that at a pub sing somewhere....preferably in Avaloch. I wish! ;D I really don't have a problem with someone else performing "Health to the Company" though Owain's is my favorite, and the most touching version, IMO. I've heard other acts play the song, including The Minstrels of Mayhem who used to play it at ORF. They were fantastic, and it was a very moving way to end the day. I've attended closing day down there a couple times, and when they played that song there were many tears...so I agree it's the sentiment of the song that's the most important factor. I think it would be really cool if the cast were to sing it.

Years ago, cast all went up on stage at the end of Pub Sing to do the closing song, and then head for Closing Gate. It was a lot of fun....remind me to tell you about the time I nearly took the whole back of the stage down!.....and I'm not sure why they stopped doing it. Be nice to see the tradition revived!

Ya know Dillasandra, I remember that, and I remember how much fun it was. Maybe they could revive it. If Richard is on cast in some capacity, I know he would be absolutely champing at the bit to involve them in a rousing chorus. So long as it's not Spanish Ladies..... Cause let's face it Richard... no one can honestly remember those verses ...... in order..... at the end of the day.......
And the tradition of singing at the gate has continued, which I always think is nice. Partially because that late in the day, can't think of anything witty to say...

I think if the whole cast got on the stage and performed Health to the Company, it would be just as good. Yes...it would not be the same as Owain doing it, but we can't always plan to have him at GLMF, just like alot of other good entertainers. We have to accept that.
So....the GLMF staff should establish Pub Sing guidelines, so that it doesn't matter who is on cast or who is Entertainment Director, the same songs or Pub Sing schedules are maintained each year to build a "traditional" pub sing event.

I think the Pub Sing, as well as the rest of the day's events, fall under the heading of 'vision of the entertainment director', hence the changes over the years. Brook, I belive, was the one to do away with the whole cast singing. No idea why....I was an Independant by then, and didn't go to rehersals. I'm sure he had his reasons.
I WOULD love to see the tradition of the cast doing the final song ( Along with the audience and everyone else up on stage, of course ) revived. And if HTTC is going to be a problem, there are plenty of other songs out there. ( I know Spanish Ladies myself, but I'll grant you, it can be tricky for some! ). In fact, my first two years, under Dale Lake, we did a lovely, non-traditional song written especially to close Faire, and the audience loved it.
When all is said and done , it's going to be up to Scott this year as to how it goes, and I, for one, trust him to do a great job of it. Sooooo, we wait and see! Though I doubt he'd mind a suggestion or two along the way.

Oh really Morgan? In ORDER? in the same order that Richard remembers them?!!! (Sorry big bro, I had to!)
Cast song, with Brook at least, was never really dropped. We practiced songs during rehersal. We were just supposed to sing with the audience in the group.
And although, the cast didn't sing on the stage, I've seen the darling tradition of mass clinking of cups and toasting run rampant during the final song. Let's not forget that! Fantastic way to remember friends and include the audience and new comers into the "experience" on a level that is so high and can not be counterfeited. And if the whole cast was on stage, could they do that? Granted enough of the participatrons might hold up their end. BUT participatron's job is to enjoy.
I dunno... (and Wild Mountain Thyme worked until Ashe (Allan A'Dale) got a job on a cruise ship and had to leave at the end of the run. )

Well, I must admit I first learned that song from an Irish singer, Dermot Sommerville at the "Derby and Flask" over 20 years ago...entirely different tune but same verses. Then in Warwickshrire (Sterling Faire) under the guidance of Don Juan and Miguel (Now THAT Faire has an AWESOME Pub Sing...and a "Rogue's" Pub Sing mid-day for the more...rowdy types!) ...but I think I can hold my own... ;D And this version has a few more verses than I'm familiar with... www.chivalry.com/cantaria/lyrics/spanish_ladies.htmlBut if it's a "Pub Sing" Off we're heading for...then well met!

On a slightly different note does anyone (mayhaps Sarah) know if rehearsals for cast will be starting later than normal this year? Seeing as how I'm used to rehearsals starting in May and Axel's website says he will be in Tennessee all May.

On another slightly differnt note but pertaining to this Season...heard something about the possibility of there NOT being any Jousting??? That Larry instead is thinking of having the Circus perform more in place of the Jousting...any one care to field this question?

If there is no jousting, then it will be the end of GLMF. I mean seriously, even smaller faires (which GLMF is seemingly approaching below) still have jousting.
What a joke.

A Faire without Jousting is like a Faire without music or ale...it's just...just...NOT done!

Ahoy from sunny Florida! I'll be back in town in 2 weeks for auditions. I don't get a chance to go on-line as much and only just now read the last 20 or so thoughts on Health to the Company. Great song! It even appears on my Irish/English Music CD: Back to the Sea. I first heard it many years ago by The Minstrels of Mayhem. I have no problems of adding a song like that, regardless of who people are used to hearing it from. I got used to Owain's version even tho I (at one time) thought only the Minstrels of Mayhem should be ending a show with it. I also love Owain's version. This season, the cast will be taking the pub sing stage to help sing the final song. My thoughts however, are to bring in a different song for closing. You may know it. It's called The Parting Glass, and is a great ending tune. We'll see. Take care and hope to see some of you at the Auditions. scott
